If the idle isn't smooth, check the MAF. Mine needed a clean before 20k miles. It was slightly oily, and a squirt of cleaner fluid resolved it.
Worth checking,( especially with K&Ns).

Worth checking,( especially with K&Ns). Thanks Dave, MAF has been cleaned, and then changed. Also cleaned the IAC valve, changed standard air filter and spark plugs. Next up will be the leads. I've had all manner of additives put in the fuel to clean the injectors also. It's not an issue as it never stalls, just when you are used to a perfectly smooth running engine in the tin top, it's just a bit irritating.

I've just had the alternator voltage on my 2005 series 1 Roadster tested and it's giving 13.9 volts. Was your engine warm, or was this from a cold start. might do a variety of tests, from cold, warm, with load and without,to see what I get.

It was tested during a service & MOT visit to Berrybrook - I assume the engine was warm

Try pulling the plugs after rough running, see if any are wet/different colour.

I changed the plugs last year so that could be an idea as any colour change would be obvious. One was a bit wet, but I did squirt some wd40 down the hole as the plug was tight, so this might have been why.

Whilst WD40 might be used on the threads of a plug to help clean them up, squirting it down the plug hole is not advised as it can create carbon deposits on the plug and cause issues. Well documented if you google.

Don't mind shelling out £60, but is there a test I could do to see if that could be the cause?Umm, not really a technical one, but symptoms similar to yours, like lumpy tickover, hesitation on acceleration, lack of torque, tend to point to a coil pack failing (buy a decent branded one, not some fleabay copycat crap)
