IMF predicting that the UK will return to "Ultra Low" pre pandemic interest levels, sighting low productivity and an ageing population.

With the majority of wealth in older generations hands who by nature seek to preserve their wealth by saving, like it or not, Central Banks will have to concede that the economic future depends on spenders not savers.

One of the articles i read reporting on the IMF blog was a little blunt saying the opposite. "Its not about the Boomers, they have had their day"

That is another reason why being a boomer is good - you can ignore all of these juvenile hipster “experts” and do your own thing undeterred as usual innocent

We have learnt that no amount of speculation and hypothesizing about the future is worth the paper it's written on grin2 there will always be another 911 or Ukraine....which jumps out and stops the world or another SARS variant to name but a few recent ones, oh did I mention Liz Truss.

Not sure the top table of the IMF can be described as "hipsters". You missed the biggest man made or should i say Boomer made disaster of all time, Brexit off your list. Not that that can be repeated, well not in boomers life time anyway.

I fall on the border of being one but see if more is not done to improve the financial prospects of the younger generations (each generation is supposed to be better off than the one before) than this country which is already a poor country pretending to be rich will sink.

Come January 2025 the lunatics will be in charge of the asylum. Savers beware.

Perhaps we need to redefine our definition of 'better off' .... if it remains defined as 'bigger house ... bigger car ....bigger everything' then that is obviously not going to happen as it's totally unsustainable .... and the 'post-boomers' with their strong focus on 'climate-catastrophy' and the environment (not to mention social-justice ) will be the first to acknowledge this. You can have a pleasantly habitable planet or 'more stuff' but not both.

K

PS I will add that in spite of being a 'boomer' (and I have plenty of concerns about the way that term is glibly used to denigrate and diminish a diverse and progressive generation) I have never bought in to the above definition of 'better off' or pursued the 'dream' .... and not likely to change now 🙂

The current endless stream of striking by the new generation must be working wonders for the economy doh

They have to blame someone so the boomers is the easy option rather rather than looking in the mirror, it could be a fair statement that we ignored the environment but it should be borne in mind we didn't have the current level of knowledge either.

We just made our own way raising and educating a young family of three in a quiet modest way and still live in our 3 bedroom house of 44 years with no plans to move, some people are just happier than others as always laugh2

Tomhez - not looking forward to the 2025 loonies either..

Think you are on dodgy ground with the strikes Richard.

1972 23.9 million days lost to strikes
1979 29.4 million days lost to strikes Public sector workers
1984 27.1 million days lost to strikes
1989 4.1 million days lost to strikes

2022 2.5 million lost to strikes

I do agree that we live in times when taking responsibility for ones own situation is in short supply though. I think the young will add, final salary pensions and the best of the housing market to your comment on the environment.

I would think to be "better off" is confined to basic standards of living and not bigger everything. There are millions who would settle for a home of modest proportions. I am still reeling from the suggestion earlier in this thread that the housing shortage is exaggerated and the poster used unsold new housing as an example to back up the claim!
