If you can use a grease gun and tighten a nut correctly without using torque wrench you're nearly there John  Back in the early 70's I had a engineering lecturer who was ex RAF WW2 era, that told us there were only three torque values to worry about.. Tight.. Bloody tight.. ( or words to that effect ) and Snapped off.

He was a hell of a character, worked mainly on Lancasters during WW2 undertaking design changes. If the engineering lectures were getting too boring we found that he was easily distracted by asking indirect questions about 1930's aero engine carburettor operation in a dive.. He would then go on about the advantages of early fuel injection and the half way evolution of a semi carb and injector system. He always lectured to us with his eyes closed, guess he could see it all in his head as he talked.. Those were the days..
