I need to get to Malvern (yaay!) I'm in London for the Marathon on Sunday, so can travel from Paddington - Cheltenham - Worcester - Malvern Link - that's £33 1st class for an off peak ticket. Which seems like a bargain Especially if I look at stopping in Cheltenham - the London-Cheltenham 1st off peak ticket is (wait for it....) £66 So, um, twice the price. In effect I'm being paid to go from Cheltenham to Malvern Link - I'm now wondering if £33 is enough of a bribe. Should I be asking for more? Which is mad. Will

It is similar here . If I start in Ipswich with a single ticket to London it costs far more than a ticket Ipswichto Manningtree (the next stop) then Manningtree to London. But the real madness is that a taxi or long term parking & driving to LGW is cheaper & reliable.

Split tickets, are often cheaper if you cross over the rush hour peak fares time. So get the peak ticket to the first stop, then non peak from there. Its worth chasing the anomalies.
I once got a return to Perth from Doncaster for well under £30.

I once got a return to Perth from Doncaster for well under £30. Indeed - I always buy on Trainline, which automatically splits tickets. Will

All those odd people that work in the glowing donut of G__Q mean that the London-Cheltenham train can be busy.
Is it possible to order a LDN-MAL ticket and then just get off at CHEL part way and save the cash? Or do the "computer say no" gates block it ? Feels like a good opportunity for alternative cost savings here?
I am more impressed that you think the idea of common sense in ticket pricing should exist 8)

If there is a human ticket collector you might be caught, but you could say you got off because you felt unwell.....

I am going to South Wales and British Rail say stopping off en-route no problem!
Looking forward to it.

Never had to commute by train, so rarely use them - trying to think, but believe my longest train journey is from Sheffield to Malvern (via Birmingham) to collect the Aero after warranty work.
Once hired a boat on the Caledonian canal and looked at two return tickets to Inverness, but it was cheaper to hire a car, drive it up to Scotland and park it up unused for the week then drive it back.

It's only in recent years that I've been able to get to school via public transport
However - by car it takes about 40mins there and 1hour back, and costs about £7 in petrol
By Public Transport it involves three buses, one train and a 25 minute walk - total 2hrs and 20 mins each way, and costs about £32.......
