Two Automatic Test Drives

I hadn’t driven the Plus Six since October 2019, and I drove a manual Plus Four in 2020. Yesterday I drove the latest version of the Six and the automatic Plus Four.

It took just over 3 hours to drive from Lampeter to Williams, avoiding the M4 until Newport. As ever, the drive was well worth the effort, and I was nicely looked after by Henry and Lyndon, assisted by Philip, who lives nearby.

It’s a great feeling to simply be given the keys to a brand new sports car, and told to bring it back when you’ve had enough! I took the Plus Four out first, after a bit of head-scratching by me and Philip. Henry reminded us about keeping your foot on the brake pedal in order to get out of “Park” mode!

Adjusting the seat-back angle, and pulling the seat fully forward, gave me a very comfortable position (I am about 5’6). I noticed that, with the door closed, there is not much space to the right of the ignition key. Apart from that, it felt fine and cosy. I believe the seats are the “Comfort Plus” variety.

I moved off very gingerly, just gradually getting the feel of things. The car felt heavier and somehow more “solid” than my old 2011 Plus 4. The brake pedal seemed very firm with a short travel, but no problem after a while. Driving in “Auto” mode was nice, but hear changes felt a bit lumpy and sometimes hesitant. In “Sport” mode the gear changes seemed fine as far as I recall, and quickly got used to which range of gears to flick through. Often when approaching a junction, I would just move the lever back to “Auto” to keep things easy.

Returning to Williams, I had a coffee and a chat before taking the Plus Six out. I have to say that I surprised myself in liking the look of the Six a lot more in the “flesh”. The proportions seem to look better somehow.

Getting into the Plus Six immediately felt more comfortable than the Four. Presumably this is down to the extra space inside. Again, I had the seat fully forward. These are Comfort Plus seats as well.

Another thing that was better in the Plus Six was the gear changes in automatic mode. It all seemed a lot smoother - so much so that I didn’t bother with Sport mode very much. And the extra power and torque is of course great fun. I did a few “experiments” with acceleration in 7th gear, which brought a smile to my face!

The brake pedal travel and feel seemed about the same as the Plus Four. Also I liked the feel of the steering wheel, but probably prefer the look of a skinnier wooden Moro-Lita version.

I enjoyed the Plus Six so much that I didn’t want to give it back - I was literally grinning to myself during the drive.

Thank you for the insightful report. I can well understand that some car in the metal only really looks good, so the Plus six, for example, as well as the Alpine 110.

Umm, I really don't get the 6 falling off the headrest...but then I don't have any street cred - perhaps it's to appeal to an American football star or a 'Prisoner' aficionado

Yes I thought that too a bit overdone for me. I think the Four is the better of the two in auto format.

The car in the photo looks great in silver wheels; just saying. Mind you, would look better with stainless wire wheels... just saying What a pity the Plus Six cannot have wires; or indeed now a Moto-Lita steering wheel.
