I'd have a Plus SIx. Traditional looks, modern drive train and the underlying sense that if you disrespect it, it will try and kill you.

Not had much experience with performance cars, bar a few drives of Porsche C4S, GT3 and GT3RS. All were good to drive but first two were fairly sanitised and far too teutonic for me. Had a spin in a Musk Float, but again, bar the straight line performance it was rather boring (unless you are of the Playstation generation and enjoy all the tech stuff).

Like the look of some of the Lotus offerings, but couldn't live with the looks of the A110 - something just doesn't sit right.

I'm also a bit of a boy racer, but to me, it's all about ragging the arse off something to make it perform as best as it possible can, rather than just putting your foot down in a high specification vehicle. I enjoy the journeys where the average performance car leaves you for dust on the straights, but you catch up and they just can't shake you on the twisties.......

The Boxster is far more civilised, more luggage, a near perfect convertible hood, whereas the Morgan hood is rubbish; 19 minutes & 2 fingernails each time. BUT, I prefer the Morgan to the Boxster even though it is more expensive. I put up with the terrible hood as a redesign would not be possible without changing the car completely. Then it would not be a Morgan. The Morgan is far more special than a Boxster and, apart from the hood, is more fun, more style, more me smile

You should see the hood in the Aero S5.

huh?

Yes, the S5 hood is a kit of parts - and once you figure out how to assemble them, it takes about the time to assemble that it takes your co-driver to fetch a parking ticket.
A couple of minutes.
Less time of course if you've both got the knack of it.

The upside to the assembly process is that 1) it's watertight (no, really really actually watertight!) and 2) it packs away flat, and there's still room left in the slot behind the seats for plenty more luggage.

Aero S4 based Plus 8 from 2014 or Boxster 718 S from 2016?
My dilemma...
As of today I own both, but have to chose one.
My heart says keep the Morgan, my head says keep the Boxster.....

We cannot afford both, the Boxster is easier to get into, easier to drive, uses less fuel, has a far better ride and isn't bad looking. The dealer is 30 mins away.
It has some character, but not like the Morgan.
The Morgan is now difficult for both of us to enter and exit, the ride isn't bad, but it isn't special. It is a delight to behold and makes people smile. In bad weather the hood, whilst waterproof, is claustrophobic, noisy and cannot be put up in a hurry. There is no luggage space to speak of and the dealer is 90 mins away.

Age is a bu**er when it forces you into decisions like this!!

Peter, what do you think about the idea to drive the Morgan for the next years and to deregister your Boxter but to keep it if you like it very much and if it is the right one. We are at an age where a cherished car can be more important than the brand new one. I would not trade in my 2007 Elise for a new one, at least there is no reason to pay extra for a new one. If you and your wife can't handle the morgan anymore, get in, get out etc, only then sell it, realize the proceeds and let the boxter go again...just an idea, and probably a much more sensible choice than buying another Porsche in four years which may be much more expensive then.

Your Boxster will probably depreciate quite savagely the longer you hang on to it.
I guess you've had a good look at the CX cars, less luggage space than the boxster but surely as easy to get in to, and still a Morgan.....
Interestingly, there are now Plus Four's below the price of standard +4's, not even ARP4's or babydoll's....!🤷🏻‍♂️

Julian, yes, the Porsche will depreciate in value, but another used one from 2016 that will be just as old in a years time won't be as good as the one Peter would keep. And a later then 7 year old Porsche will be much more expensive.

Never an easy decision to make. I tend to look at this in the context of what use I want to put the vehicle to on a daily basis and how suitable it is to meeting those needs ,so more of a 'head' decision, weighed against the heart in the sense of the number of truly halcyon days where one may enjoy the' heart' moments more.

Following a fall on icy steps pre Xmas, when I hurt my back, I find I can no longer get in and out the Morgan easily and depressing the clutch aggravated the injury, making it very uncomfortable to drive. Sadly, this week the my Morgan Roadster 4 seater has been sold. I had been looking for something to replace it, having for decades driven convertibles many with mohair hoods. I gone for a Mercedes SLC with a folding hard top, which I am finding more opportunity to drive roof down, as I don't have to wait till the roof is bone dry before lowering otherwise the mohair creases. Having so much more fun, so much so, that the wife has changed the Mercedes cabriolet for one of the last Euro 6 SLK's and she is enjoying far more roof down motoring than we were ever able to achieve with the mohair roof cabriolet.

Do I miss the Morgan, yes from time to time without question, especially the smiling faces and waves from passers by etc, but when it comes down to the core reason for owning and driving a convertible car I'll take the SLC and SLK any day, even if it doesn't have the cache of a Morgan. Maybe at some point in the future we will consider an automatic CX as the wife wont drive a manual car.

Whilst unfortunately certain events have forced my hand, I'm enjoying my fresh air motoring, which is central to why I drive a convertible car.

John,

the Boxster has a great mohair fabric roof and it is the best of both worlds. Light, and waterproof, yet folds away and opens in a moment....
Possibly surprisingly, we get as many positive reactions to the car, hood down, as the Plus 8 did.
