Good luck to them.
Very chilling to see the Not My King demonstrators arrested & denied being allowed their right to peaceful protest. Are we now a facist regime?... Right to protest vs right to disrupt? I read that some of the demonstrators were handing our rape alarms which would have been truly dangerous with horses around. If thats the case the police were doing their job in preventing idiots from being dangerous idiots... Yes but that wasnt the case for the not my king folk

I read that some of the demonstrators were handing our rape alarms which would have been truly dangerous with horses around. If thats the case the police were doing their job in preventing idiots from being dangerous idiots... Yes but that wasnt the case for the not my king folk Perhaps not - but they did threaten to disrupt the event and the police did not know what they had to face. Freedom of speech is of course sacrosanct - but it does not extend to allowing demonstrators to disrupt an important state ceremonial occasion which so much careful planning had been put into. Neither does it permit them to assault the person of the monarch, as a few nutters have attempted by throwing eggs at him. Thankfully, all the eggs missed. The demonstrators were set upon by enraged members of the public, which is not good for the safety of the demonstrators or the public. No one wants to see fights in the crowd during the coronation. The temporary detainment of the protestors was justifiable. They are out now and will be free to say what they want. Republicanism has always been a feature in the UK - it was at its height in the reign of Victoria. Its appeal has always risen and fallen, but it has never (and neither do I believe it ever will) gained enough traction to make it a majority view.

"not my king folk"
Strange choice of name really. He is our King. We have a king. If a group wish we didn't have a king why not call them "I'd rather not have a king"
I'm getting pretty sick of protestors who want to ruin other people's day. There are plenty of legitimate ways to voice opposition to things. Articles in newspapers, petitions, there are no end of decent ways that don't entail disrupting the lives of us ordinary folk going about our daily grind.
I wonder how they would feel if us "not for ruining other people's day folk" started gluing ourselves to them?
Rant over

Well done King Charles III, Nothing wrong with tradition and respect. The royal family certainly bring lots of tourist dollars to the UK

The the only reason to keep them (the main Royals at least) is the tourist money they bring in. We would miss that. I am personally ambivalent about the whole issue and don't waste my time thinking about it or them. I wonder how much revenue the BBC received from selling their coverage globally? Taxpayers paid for the whole event, so we should get a share of the profits in my view.

A small scale monarchy. Look the Netherlands as a good example or Denmark.

A small scale monarchy. Look the Netherlands as a good example or Denmark. I don't think there is much popular support for that type of monarchy in the UK.We like our pomp and pageantry. But the King has made some nods towards it by slimming down the number of working royals.

Another thing to remember about the Coronation is that it wasn't only the 'swearing in' of a Head of State of a major nation ...but also the consecration of the head of a significant world religion ... when you think of the swearing in of a President along with installing a new Pope at the same time, it all looked pretty swift and minimalist! ๐
Point was made Saturday that we've been through 3 Prime Ministers and a change of Head of State in a few months with no drama ... in most countries (including the likes of the US) that would generate civil unrest and death (in many countires just going to the polls for a GE ends with deaths in the hundreds) .... I'd be wary of chucking out a millenium of what works for the assumption that the alternative would be better because it's abstractly 'more democratic' ... personally I'd need more than empty slogans about 'accountability' and 'democracy' when a quick glance round the planet indicates they're very often not worth the breath of shouting them. I've come to the point in my life when I'm less impressed by the abstract dogma and more by what works
Playing Devil's advocate here but anyone suggesting we overturn a system that's served the Country passably well for a thousand years should be able to come up with significant concrete and practical ways in which an elected Head of State would actually benefit our political system over our current way of doing things .. .. make a list for discussion ๐
K
Ps ... I have no attatchment to any particular 'crown -wearer' ...we're talking institutions here rather than indivuduals that come and go within them.

The fact the monarch heads up a mojor organised religion is the main argument for junking the monarchy IMO. It is ridiculous, but the only reason for a monarchy to even exist at all is this stupid idea of a "divine right to rule". What tosh! But if they bring money in then they can stay, all else is fantasyIMO.
