Yesterday I noticed that the steel cover over the water pump drive belt was chafing into the black fibreglass air box right next to the MAF housing.

The water pump drive pulleys are at the back of the engine adjacent to the bell-housing on this version of the V6, which was designed to be a transverse installation.

What you don't need is an air leak into the MAF area. Two set-screws hold the cover in place. The top one is 7mm, the lower one is 8mm. The wiring loom is secured to the cover by a cable tie.

Once removed I cut off the corner and rounded the shape using a file and wet'n'dry. Now there is a few mm gap.

My S1 didn't have the metal belt guard installed from new

Thanks for the warning. I checked my S1 and there is a 2-3mm gap. No problem.
