Last year my M3W started seeping oil into the sump. So if it sits more than a couple of weeks, I have about 1.5 quarts in the sump. if I start it, I end up blowing a lot of burnt oil smoke ut the mufflers....

so added to the routine... drain the d@mn sump before start up and return the oil to the tank

Rodger, you can always use a shutoff valve in the oil feed line, but you MUST remember to open the valve before starting. That might still be easier than draining the sump after sitting for a couple weeks.

Do like they do on airplanes, place a big red flag over your steering wheel to turn on the valve before starting. Or make something that has to be removed before you can insert the key or hit the start button.

I wonder if it's wear on the pressure side of oil pump that allows some to wet sump more than others?

A check valve would be the best solution but you have to be sure of its reliability. My Velocette Venom had such employing a spring loaded inverted ball valve at the bottom of oil tank, relying on suction from oil pump to open valve against light spring. Important that feed line didn't contain air though. I recall an owner retro-fitting similar from a Japanese bike when his OE valve seat became worn.

or turn the engine over with the throttle pressed so it doesn't start until the oil is back in the tank

Start the engine every week....

Good luck with that. If you have ever pushed a bike in gear with plug out in the hope of seeing oil return to tank will know what I mean

It does work I have tested it after someone else on here suggested it

How long were you cranking? I get 1 minute and roughly 20 seconds to get to almost complete replacement back into the tank.

I have not measured the time, maybe 2 lots of 5-10 seconds then checked and went from min dipstick to max but could have been up to max before I checked (after the first cranking burst) and at the rate in your video, the oil in the sump would possibly be scavenged back to the tank before the engine starts normally anyway, it takes a few goes if left
