A heap of burnt out junk estimated at £1.2 million. Yet the end result after restroation will have only the most tenuous connection with the original, with a different engine, wheels, interior and almost all exterior. Maybe even a new chassis since fire can weaken the original.

Its an illustration of just how silly classic car prices have become. Bubble territory

It is silly indeed how expensive some wrecks become.

Comparing this Ferrari to https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-65944866 it is perhaps interesting to reflect on how different individuals choose to view what can be done with money, time and effort,

Just read this. Although this is an extreme example it does beg the question about how far do you go when restoring a classic.

There are several marques of classic racer where there are more running now than were ever made originally .... cars built round orphan crashed chassis and recovered engines replaced during meetings ... all claiming their validity via the substantial original part they're built round 🙂

I just rember a German Cabaret artist who once said that there are people who build a World War 2 motorbike out of an oil slick found in front of the Brandenburger Tor.

It will get shipped to Modena and Classiche will do one of their amazing and wallet numbing nut by nut jobs on it. Then again without the engine is the gain there. I cannot really see someone passing £10m for something that goes buba-buba with a big Chevy V8 in it.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

The original motor was also used in F2 single seaters so there may be one floating about at a price .... however, as the V8 was fitted 60 years ago (not uncommon in the US as the highly-strung European engines gave up having been raced for years with little hope of finding a replacement) it has a second racing history all of it's own ... although a Ferrari purist might sneer, in a US context that's a valid part of their racing history ... never ceases to amaze me how much money comes out of the woodwork for things no better than this! ... might not make the asking price but not unlikely that the final tally will still be eye-watering!!

Looking through the threads here and there's one on a 4/4 with an Alfa engine ... that motor, and the Fiat version used in Morgan's for a while, were designed by Lampredi ... who also designed the racing Ferrari 2 litre motor that was originally in this Mondial ... good pedigree!
