Hi, I’m presently touring Germany in my 4/4 2001 and have noticed the steering tends to wonder. There seems to be a little free play in the steering wheel before the car turns. Also, when stationary, if you waggle the steering right/left there is a clunking noise. Is this play due to steering rack or ball joints? Thanks
Regards
Phil

Hi, you need to check all the steering elements. First check for me would be the suspect linkage at the steering rack it's where the two track rods join at the steering rack. It's tucked behind the bottom of the radiator. This is quite prone to failure and can be catastrophic if it fails when driving as both wheels will separate and steer where they wish!!! get under the car with someone wiggling the steering side to side, slowly but with some force and ascertain Whether this bracket is sound or not.
If ok then follow the track rods out to the hubs and check the patency of the track rod to rack joint, the ball joints at the steering arms at the hub. If all is ok there check if there is any free play at the wheels grasp the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and check for movement, then again at 9 and 3 o'clock. You're feeling for knock or a loose feeling. This could indicate a wheel bearing problem. check the spinners/ nuts for security. Finally check the tyre pressures both front and back that can cause wandering and imprecise handling. if nothing is apparent after this a greater in depth look is needed. If you belong to AA/RAC etc. European cover is often provided so try that route as they should pick it up for you. Failing that try a local garage as it's a situation not to be messed with! Best of luck and hope all is quickly sorted!

Check also for cracked rack. This will only be possible with the gaiter removed. If the car has ever been jacked up inadvertently here, or had an impact, it can crack the ally housing. This will make the whole rack unit flex under pressure of turning.
