Just following up on this - I have my car up on stands today (because there is some weird shunt in the drivetrain when pulling away and I wanted to see if any bolts were loose or missing.....anyway) and I noticed that where the pipes join the back section and are secured with compression clamps around them, on one side there is a liberal coating of soot right next to the joint. I would post a picture but that seems like a tricky job here. The other side was much cleaner (the whole underneath of the car is pretty clean due to lack of miles and only dry miles)

So perhaps the sporadic smells coincide with gas/emissions escaping at the joint - perhaps under high load or maybe high vibration. Anyway - I thought I would share that observation. I've tightened the clamp up

Just had 5 days away touring north wales superb ride and mpg but the oil smell comes every time you use the naughty pedal in anger. It goes as quick as it comes but tends to linger a bit in the rain with the roof up. Like Neil need to get it on a lift for a look.. Em

STOP PRESS..despite my earlier posts saying that mine has always smelt too, I recently thought that the exhaust sound had altered slightly, as if it was blowing somewhere. All clamps were tight but when I held the back of my hand near the cat, I could feel a distinct puffing. This was on the front of the cat where the round pipe is welded to the cat can. It looked as if the original weld, though neat, had not really merged into the can, as I could see a crack running all the way round, though it was only leaking at the top.
My local friendly garage took it off today, cleaned it up and applied a more generous weld together with a couple of short straps to reinforce.
With the Duratec engine, it seems that the only flexibility between engine and exhaust system lies in the silencer bobbins. The GDI however, has I believe a flexi section of pipe, which may be better idea.
