Hi,

What would it take to retrofit rack & pinion steering to our 1973 +8 RHD? I've been told that it's not really possible to the early narrow cars without a lot of modifications, but not sure...? And any idea about the cost implications?

Cheers

An awful lot!

New stub axles for a start, about £800 per side last time I priced one.

If heavy steering is an issue, have you thought about having your steering box overhauled?

Also popping a PTFE disc under the damper plate lightens the steering

A Gemma Box is as good as a steering box gets. In many ways it is better than R & P as the track rods are much longer and damp out bump steer.

If you have an earlier (pre-Gemma) box then looking around for one of the these will be a MUCH cheaper option for you, and arguably just as good.

Plus one for a gemmer. My plus 4 has one and it's the best steering control I've had on a mog. Better than r and p in my opinion. Much better than the earlier steering boxes.

Got a new Gemma steering box sitting on my shelf complete with mounting bracket and drop arm.

Might be persuaded to part with it for a realistic offer

1973 Plus 8 never had a Jack Knight rack. Would have had a Cam Gears steering box

I fitted a Gemmer from USA to my 1980 Plus 8. Quite easy to swap it, you just have to grind away a little bit of the cast bracket on the car. A great improvement on the Cam Gears worm and peg that it replaced. Not cheap but did exactly what I wanted. Didn't have to remove steering column.

Arwyn, I was thinking about in the future for my own car 1985 +8. because i seem to remember that jack knight gears is no longer trading..
