Anyone found a killer solution to the problem of mounting a satnav in a trad?

I spent some time this morning working out a position for my TomTom: managed to get it hung just below the dash, roughly in front of the gearstick, where I can see the full screen (just), and don't bash it with either gearchange hand or left knee.



All fine then: plenty of contrast - as it's shaded by the dash; fixes satellites without delay, and it's dead handy for the 12v connector just next door. Sorted! Except ...

I can't hear Jeremy Clarkson's dulcit tones (a blessing, some may say!) - and that's with sidescreens on. I could hear fine with it stuck on the glovebox lid, but not in its new location. Guess there's nothing now for the sound from the rear-mounted speaker to bounce off. Can't win

Thing is: I can't get on with it screen-mounted (or on top of the dash), a) because it obscures my view - especially of the n/s wing, and b) because on a bright day I can't see the screen image. And affixed to the glovebox lid is just, well, naff really (and far from ideal when solo).

Add the stress of continental route-finding, and it could prove even more inflammatory than good old-fashioned paper

Any thoughts anyone?

I use velcro sticky tape on the top of the sat nav & the underside of the leather on the crash roll on top of the dash. It hangs there & is easy to see & hear but it block the centre guages on 97 + 4

I have a tom-tom and use a mat , sort of heavy bean bag, supplied by tom-tom but other makes are available.
1. handy for the 12v connection
2.under dash so not affected by light, but no issue in finding signal
3. easy to remove when not needed
4. no screws, stickies , velcro or tape....
5. zero interference with gears or brake.
6. no gauges or dials compromised

Mine sits in the seat next to me.

She tells me everything that I need to know.

I assume you mean mat-mounted on top of the transmission tunnel 62TC? I'm going to have the same issue with the sound getting lost - as that's effectively where I've got it now - just top-hung instead of sat on the tunnel. (Mine's a TomTom as well btw).

I'm wondering whether I can find a way to reflect the sound back - or else fit an extension speaker - somewhere - somehow

Yes it rests on the tunnel beside the handbrake. I don't use the sound as much.... to be fair I can hardly hear the radio when moving over 30mph... i do tend to slow down when lost, then I can hear it!. It might be that the mat which sort of snuggles around the satnav afford some sort of acoustic support!

can it work via a bluetooth device? If so wearing an ear one might help.

That's an idea Steve. Certainly it has the facility to connect my phone via Bluetooth - so that the phone can be used hands free: but as I can't hear the speaker, that's a little academic! I'll see if I can find someone who uses a bt ear-dongle and give it a try.

I think you would need the motorcycle version to have instructions via bluetooth.

I have just bought myself a new TomTom (I now have two) and I hope I can find somewhere to fit it, so this thread is quite interesting to me.

I find that I use the visual instructions quite a lot so I hope to find somewhere to fit it where it can be seen. If necessary I will construct a visor to shade the screen. In my Alfa I have always fitted the navigator to the drivers side of centre of the windscreen but as low as possible.

If that blocks the view too much perhaps the driver's side bottom corner?

Presently mine sits on a mat just behind the gear lever when in the Mog (sorry Ian, Morgan!). Don't rely on the audio too much.
Might investigate mounting it between the two clocks in front of the steering wheel - the old binatone I sold would have fitted there, not sure about the new Mio with its wider screen.
