An E-car may be good if it is the 2nd car in the garage, but for independence my primary car must not have milage limitations. Sometimes urgent long distance trips are still a necessity. For city purposes public transport mostly is the better option.

I wonder why the PHEV solution doesn't get much love.
Eg. Audi A3 tfsi-e.
40m electric range, plus 400m petrol range, 0-60 under 8 seconds, eminentely practical small family car

Filled up with petrol as per normal for long journeys, so no range anxiety
No emissions for local journeys - and recharge from solar panels 50% of the year - which for me might cover 75% of my driving
Small battery so does not consume much of the earths lithium/graphite etc resources compared to a full EV
10-20% premium over pure petrol version - which does not seem a huge amount to me over say 8 years depreciation (and might be offset against the reduced petrol consumption over the years)

Has anyone got one or something similar ? What's not to love ? (particularly if you also have a Morgan in the garage)

I think our Golf is a PHEV (not entirely sure on all the differences in nomenclature - it's a Golf 1.4 TSI eHybrid). Petrol engine, but a small electric motor/battery which charges predominantly by the house plug in, but does get a little boost from regenerative braking. We get about 31miles using electric only.

I wonder how many pure EV owners have access to other ICE vehicles? Everyone in my circle of friends who has a Tesla, or full EV has an ICE car as well.

Similar-ish... the i8 is hybrid.

A nominal 36 mile ev range translates into a lifetime average 50mpg. It would be more but for the dearth of (working) charging points at destinations. Meanwhile, the car has immediate torque on tap, and can keep up with ostensibly far quicker machinery, if that's your mojo for the day. Or cruise comfortably for mile after mile. My record is 700 miles in a day.

& as I'm combining two cars into one, my i8 is for sale (as it the wonderful Aero)

Wise move, I combined my Plus 8 and Tesla M3 into a Porsche 718 Boxster S....a year ago and have not regretted it for a moment.

I owned a plug-in hybrid for a while. I had dedicated home charging which was used almost exclusively and hence the running costs were low. The electric only range varied between 22 and 30 miles which was enough for most days but I would have preferred more, say 50 miles as that would have covered the majority of my use.

The downside of the plug-in was on longer runs when the battery is just a dead weight that you're carrying. My average fuel consumption on trips of several hundred miles was a disappointing 38 mpg. The fuel tank was also smaller on the plug-in version (due to battery intrusion).

When I owned the plug-in I seldom used remote charging facilities. On the odd occasion I did, I found the experience frustrating.

Due to a change in residence I don't have easy access to a charging point and so when it came time to change I went for a self-charging hybrid. This has averaged just over 50 mpg over several thousand miles.

Both vehicles are mid-sized SUV's.

In conclusion, choosing between full electric, plug-in or self-charging will very much depend on your intended use and access to charging facilities.

oh, I wish... put the i8's hybrid powertrain into an 1100kgs CX platform & you'd have a 4 wheel drive rocket / stealth roadster

If I had to go the way of EV in some form just driving locally then I must say that the Citroen Amy fulfils a lot of requirements especially with the 20mph blanket being adopted in built up areas.

Just read the blurb. It would take alot to make me want one of those.
Range...up to 30 miles but if you do 20 miles it goes into economy mode and limits speed to 10 mph!
They admit it doesn't like steep hills and safety is like driving a tent!
I don't think I could cope with all the hate from other motorists.

The motoring world has truly gone properly bonkers.
