My 2012 with 9,000 miles is back in the shop again. There's a strange noise coming from the left top of the cylinder. It's been in the shop for a week as my mechanic doesn't want to pop the cover off until I got a gasket. He's got that now and I'm waiting to see what he finds.

He's also concerned about how the left exhaust pipe is dark. He's thinks that side might be running lean.

He talked to S & S the other day and they sent him the workshop manual. Took 15 emails :-) I should get a copy soon. They also told him who bought all the leftover X Wedge parts. I'll get that information too. They are in the US.

And the charging circuit isn't working. Only 1 of the three legs is putting out any voltage. The magnets have probably come loose.

Good luck sorting issues Dutch. If there was a magnet/field issue I would have thought it would impact on all three phases as the former rotates. Maybe one of the stator windings failed earlier and with ⅔rds output this wasn't noticed but now you have two out of three failed it is. If so new stator needed.

Looking ahead, and given the lack of backup for the X Wedge engine, has anyone considered an engine swap for a Harley unit (or similar)

When I was into Harleys a few years back there were several alternative builders of Harley type engines. Is this still the case ?

Yes, it is. The biggest are S&S Cycles and Revtech.

I owned a Big Dog Boxer, but can't recall which engine it used, It was about 1700 cc though.

I also customised and re-engined an FXR and may have used a Revtech in that. Again it was 17/1800 when the stock engine was 1400 as I recall.

This was all between 15 and 20 years ago and the amount of aftermarket engines and engine parts available was staggering. I recall ordering from the Custom Chrome and other catalogues which were stacked with every part you could ever imagine for Harleys and Harley styled bikes.

It seems amazing that an engine that only went out of production five minutes ago is so difficult to get parts for.

And the answer is? Inquiring minds want to know!

I would think if the magnets came loose there would be a frightful clatter and grinding coming from that area and no electrics would work and possibly a fire resulting from shorts to ground that the battery would now be putting to ground.

I have had a bolt that holds the stator come out and wipe out some magnets and 2 of the windings. Makes a bit of a racket and stops all charging. Plus it's an engine out job to sort it. New rotor and stator required.
