This is for my new to me 1965 Plus 4 four seater. I seem to have some loose wires particularly behind the cluster assembly. The water temperature gauge was not working but some wiggling of the wires behind it re-activated it. But then the horn went out. As I'm new to this I'd like to pick your brains if you've dealt with this. I'm going to assume the best thing to do is going to be to lie on my back with good strong lights and check everything as opposed to taking the assembly out and risk disconnecting or breaking something.

Any tips are appreciated!

Probably easier and maybe even safer to drop the dash slightly, balancing in steering and propping up the other side. This after disconnecting battery - just remove negative terminal and isolate.

You are then free to work with cable ties grouping excess cabling together to self support.

I did the same to tidy-up the straggly wires at the rear of my car, so the wiring for the indicators / rear / brake lights, plus reverse and fog lights, are now properly segregated and grouped up out of the way of road spray.

Also put a blanket under the dash to protect it. But given the car age the wiring might need replacing

Thank you all for responding. I may look back there at first with a flashlight to see if, as suggested, it may simply need replacing first. Then if it's just loose connections drop the dash slightly as suggested.
