Having previously owned a 4/4, a Roadster and currently a Plus 4, my personal impressions are:
2012 Sigma 4/4 Sport: Needed the nuts reving off it to make any meaningful progress, Very bumpy ride. Wallowed alarmingly in corners when pushed hard. Had 9 stud hood that leaked in the rain.115 bhp and 35 to 40 mpg.
2014 Cyclone 3.7 Roadster: Impossible to change from 1st to 2nd gear above 3000 rpm. Consequently, 1st gear seldom used. Surprisingly minimal torque at low revs. Violent rear axle twitch when attempting rapid upward gear changes above 3000 rpm. Comfortable ride and pleasant to drive if burbled along at low revs. Easy up hood never leaked. 280 bhp and 28 - 30 mpg. Expensive to road tax.
2015 GDI Plus 4: Very slick gearchange. Smooth and progressive power delivery. Predictable handling. More beef from the engine would be good. Easy up hood as above. 150 bhp and 37 - 42 mpg. Average road tax.
Fully accept that not every car will behave as mine have or do. The only sure way to evaluate a particular car is to test drive it under various conditions.
You pays your money and you takes your choice, I had tthree 3.0 Roadster, best was S1, then a P4SS and now since 9 years a 4/4 Sigma which I like most. I had to sort the suspension have a sports manifold plus mapping and 150 hp with a lot of low rev torque. Good enough for vacancies to Italy as well as short blasts.

Chris and Heinz,
Many thanks for your posts, that's just the kind of info I am after. Mine isn't a Sigma car but Chris your experience tallies with mine (except the hood - mine has a Simmonds hood which is fab. Of course it leaks elsewhere...)! I suspect if I did what Heinz has done, and fitted a Librands exhaust and manifold, plus SSL or the like front and rear suspension, it might be a much better car. That's not a cheap option though.

That's not a cheap option though. My Morgan 4/4 Sport (now sold) wasn't slow at all. I had the ITG air induction kit, ecu re-map, Librands exhaust (not manifold) It lacked a little torque but if kept above 3000 rpm it was a little power rocket. I had no regrets and might even consider another one day ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2022/10/17/AE3011E8-9F3E-433E-BF91-ACA26E6CE0F5.jpg)

"like to waft about on a wave of torque"
What torque? Motor torque or final torque on the wheels? Torque on the wheels depends on motor torque and the final ratio of gearbox * back axle.
Take the max of your RPM engine and calculate the theoreritical max speed of your car.
By instance the theoretical max speed for my 2005 PLUS 4 will be around 270 km/h ! It means a low torque on the wheel with the 5st gear... this is like an over drive.

Not that I would ever dream of suggesting such a thing, but it has been said that "liking to waft on a wave of torque" is another way of saying "I'm not very good at changing gear".

When the final ratio is low you have to often change gear particularly on the hill. With the Ford gearbox a small hill oblige to change 5->4. With the Mazda gearbox no problem, the 5th ratio is higher. Go in the Pyrénées or in the Alpes.

I prefer the “daintier” look of the 4/4 and the 1800 Zetec sport is plenty fast enough for me although I understand where you’re coming from regarding wafting.

I remember back in 2006 or so I was holding forth about how a nice light 4/4 didn't need anything more than 120-130bhp tops as that would deliver plenty of usable performance. Then I drove one of Kevin Vernon's 165bhp Ecotec conversions and was completely smitten. Heaven on a stick for me.

It has to be quite a rainstorm, and driving above 60 mph, to get my 9 stud hood to dribble a bit over the windscreen.
