Certainly appears to be heading in that direction Peter. I'm just doing an update to my Garmin SatNav - bet it doesn't include the new 20 zones!

“The following speed limits apply to all single and dual carriageways with street lights, unless there are signs showing otherwise: 30 miles per hour (48km/h) in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland 20 miles per hour (32km/h) in Wales” …. So, “unless there are signs showing otherwise…”

Thanks for making us aware that there is a change, I had not seen anything.
So this will
1) cost a fortune to implement with paperwork and new signs mostly. 2) bewilder the public and make them think politicians are really incompetent - if a sign says 30 it needs to be 30 or trust in all of them is wasted 3) generate a ton of tickets to visitors, they won't come back 4) Increase travel time for those dependant on it for work 5) result in the police having to enforce the new rules as well and coming into more disrepute, with no additional staff to enforce it no doubt.
Yet the limit change is on LIT roads where travel should actually be safer?
These people are special, where did the bit about they work for us come into this. More importantly do they believe this will be observed? Morning school runs are dangerous enough given the time pressure.
I fully support 20 around a school, highly built up area like shopping areas with edge parking reducing vision etc etc but I am getting bored of being a whipping boy for so called climate positive monkey tripe. Sorry I should not be rude, to monkeys.
/disbelief mode off.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

During the summer our County Council ( Carmarthenshire) posted a list of where the 20mph zones would be throughout the county. Several pages in the local paper. I had a look through. Basically it showed the limit being on the main routes through every village plus some routes within villages. There are already many such changes already in place. Many fixed speed cameras have been removed. These were the older types but newer ones remain. There is debate about upgrading the removed ones to enable accuracy. Whilst writing this post our Assembly MP ( not Westminster one) states ... The default was 30 with 20 options. This has reversed to default 20 with local councils having an option to put a 30 limit if deemed appropriate. Some councils are already making this choice. I travel regularly to visit sospan jnr in Canton area in Cardiff. I turn off the M4 at the Llantrisant junction and take a route via a couple of villages, re-entering Cardiff from a different route via Fairwater. Basically a better route than towards Cardiff Bay and then through a busy, congested area. Fairwater route has already been 20 for a while. I find it a better route. Not a big deal as such but, like many roads the limit is debatable and could be 30 with 20 zones at crucial places. This option to change to non 20 is there if deemed appropriate. Local knowledge has allowed me this option of an alternative route to take. It is shorter and quicker. Locally here in Llanelli I don’t need to drive through the town and can use routes that will be largely non 20 zones for regular routes. I do think that a lot of 20 zones can safely revert to 30 though and hope the Councils look at this and act. In one respect the 20 zones have been in place for a while due to traffic management with speed bumps. They have been breeding like rabbits in our area for some time. A problem in the Morgan ! Add in traffic lights, pedestrian crossings...

I wonder if all this will focus some attention on the anomaly that cycles (and I presume by extension e-bikes) are completely exempt from speed limits ... and focus a good look at the legislation around bikes in their modern incarnation.

I’ve heard the same buffoons are proposing extending birihdays to once every two years for all concerned citizens, far too many of us are killed by old age and something needs to be done.

My speedo isn't that accurate under 35mph. That mitigation would not stand up in a Court of Law unfortunately.

someone else may be able to confirm this but I was once told by a retired traffic officer that the old Gatso cameras aren't able to go below 30mph. He said that in a 20mph (eg school zone) they would be set to 30 but if they triggered there would be no leeway.
Is that why the old cameras have been removed in Carmarthenshire?
