My neighbour has bowed to the inevitable and replaced his 1989 diesel with something that is ULEZ Compliant in every way....

He is the 3rd owner, 56,000 miles, never restored, about as original car as it is possible to have. No rust that can be found, the suspension works well....coil springs and lower links at the front, Morgan type suspension at the back, but with the axle below the chassis, so reasonable travel.
No smoke from the exhaust, it starts immediately. No rattles, idles smoothly and pulls away easily.
In the UK now for vehicles of this age there is no road tax, no need for a MOT and they are exempt from low emission zone restrictions.
Does about 25 to the gallon, sits comfortably at 60mph, takes 27 seconds to get there.... according to old road tests it is capable of 80mph. Hmm, rather him than me.
Un assisted drum brakes and steering, so heavy to drive.
By his own admission he lives in the 1960s, as far as possible, hence the car. He also enjoys making a rude and a pointed gesture to the "green revolution"
I did try to convince him he should buy a Morgan of the same vintage, but he had to confess he is to old and stiff to get in and out of a Morgan. His wife has a Mazda MX 5 and he finds that difficult.....
