I am reading a few horror stories about EV insurance premiums.
Do any TMers have experience of significant increases being asked, when renewing premiums on their EVs?

Yes, in spades....

Tesla Model 3 Long Range, Dual Motor.
LV wanted £345 for the year, NFU quoted £1200, but the agent said, verbally, we don't want EVs.
A couple of other insurers quoted prices 1.5 to 2 times LV.
The reason, when I got one, was "our underwriters are not able to properly assess the full cost of accidents"
This is conformed by recent developments, John Lewis Financial Services are reported to have suspended quoting on EVs for much the same reason.

This issue is going to get more of a problem for EV owners as EVs take a larger share of the market.
Another reason to stay ICE, at least for now.

I was reading an article yesterday and the guys renewal for a Tesla Y was 4.5k and the initial offer he got was 5k.

Premium went up by £25 quid on my EV over last year. My petrol car a similar figure. Seems the non-claims drivers get whacked with the increases caused by claims due to thieves and unsafe drivers. Sick on the EV bashing in the media and gloom mongering.

And now in the news about charging marshals at motorway services to stop raging ev owner waiting !

My insurance went up from £1250 to £1700 last month. I had to go fishing to cause them to bring it back down.
First thing they did was try and reduce the coverage before they aimed to become more competitive.

None of the specialists could even get close on the Aero alone.

I mentioned that there needed to be a queue function in all of the charging apps ages ago, it's not like this has not already happened in the US already. Lets reinvent that wheel?

If the location is a BP one then put a beacon which is collected by the App. It looks at the plates in the queue already and pops up a queue and "your next" indicator. If it is smart it could also show the existing chargers and %% loaded to see if someone is being naughty and sitting inside woofing a Big Mac down at 99%.

It's not that difficult.

The fact we're considering that level of surveillance and monitoring for the simple act of filling your car up makes me think we've not got a viable infrastructure/technology yet ... satellite positioning for the Starbuck's queue next??? 🙂

We are already being violated by the data collection from these Apps. We may as well be given something for it.

I would love it if there was a big red flashing light "beacon of shame" on top of the charger which showed when you went over 90%. You could paint it as "oh, it's not good for your batteries to tweak out to 100%" and we could all read it as the "self-important ^^"**! twonk" indickator.

I agree re the infrastructure imbalance triggering this. But if there is an issue it's up to all of us to optimise it. Mostly by staying with cars propelled by gogo-juice, no point in replacing a perfectly good car and burning up more resources until we need to. Certainly not in response to a brain dead knee-jerk response to a politicians wet dream. Look look, I am green, i am.......really? Thou protesteth too much Baldrick.

Tesla has a simple system, when your battery is at 90% you have 10 mins to disconnect the car, should you fail to do so you are charged a punitive "parking rate".
I've been told that it is 3X the rate charged for electricity, per minute.
It is known as the Moron Surcharge.....

The App in your device also tells you the car is full.

Not enough charging infrastructure, insurance companies running away, what next?
I'm so very glad I got out of EV ownership when I did, before the full horror of EV ownership was exposed!

Don't get me wrong, for a local runabout, charged at home, they can be wonderful, the Electric Mini is a hoot, as long as you do less than 100 miles a day and most people do.
But as a motorway mile muncher you have to be brave....and able to plan and manage life.
And finally, for "off the beaten track" touring they are quite useless....unless you are in Wales, driving at 20mph on the flat when the range is massive, a Tesla Model 3 at that speed will do about 400 miles between charges, it is claimed.
