I was watching a programme on Isambard Kingdom Brunel & they showed his drawing instruments, just like the ones I have. They were used by a relative of mine a joiner born 1846. I used them in school. I dug them out & found that the foam I had used to cushion them had disintegrated & has marked some of them. I have tried methalated spirit & WD40 to clean them. Has anyone suggestions what to do to clean them?. https://tm-img.com/image/SVumShttps://tm-img.com/image/SVG9H

Try nail varnish remover. Usually contains acetone.

Acetone should help. A good metal polish also. Or an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner. They are similar to my 1970s set from uni. ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2023/10/21/PA211729.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2023/10/21/PA211723.jpeg)

I've not got any acetone but I'm trying wrapping in isopropyl alcohol soaked rag which seems to be helping remove the green. I want to try avoiding polish as I think the finish should be dull.

I remember doing a draughtsman apprenticeship with a right-handed drawing board and parallel arm fed set square. It was a bit awkward being left-handed.

Nail polish remover was always acetone ... unless they've messed with it for some reason. Lost count of the number of times I've had to look innocent after a cleaning job when Mrs Image was looking for hers 🙂
