My daughter has been working on very old photographic printing techniques. She will have an exhibition of her work here in Lecco next year.

It is a technique called cyanotype. She also gets sepia tones after soaking the print in a tannin bath.

That's a nice effect .. really soft ... like a daguerreotype.

Very early form of photography ... those early types had a softness about them that had a more 'arty' and mysterious feel to them ... not as clinically 'photographic' as more modern systems ... since the demise of the 'blueprint' as a major use it's mostly used as an art medium ...

She first makes a negative print on film from the original digital photo and then makes a contact print using the cyanotype process. If she wants a sepia print she then uses a taking bath which fixes and changes the colour.

It's an intuitive experimental process where you know the chemistry will do a certain thing but at the same time the outcome isn't guaranteed.

I love it because it injects chance into the very controlled technology of digital photography.

Some genres seem to have been a constant through my life ... I never grew out of my liking for Art Nouveau or Morris/Arts and Crafts

Stained glass from Arizona (not the first place you'd think of for that style)

[Linked Image]

And some William Morris ... I think it's the flowing line and denseness of the images that draws me in .... that and the jewel-like colours.

^ Nice, we live in a house built at the start of the Art Deco era, sadly some features lost over the decades and changes of owners, however still has 3 original fireplaces, cornices, big skirting boards and lovely Douglas Fir panelled doors

We spent a happy few hours at Kelmscott Manor last weekend immersed in the world of William Morris. The designs and the colours have stood the test of time. Mrs F insisted on Strawberry Thief for our curtains when we re-decorated the living room a few years ago.

K I love the hare glass.

There are some nice Art Deco bits and bobs at Coleton Fishacre and they have a lovely garden and house to look around it's in the Kingswear area.

Another favourite of mine is the end wall in the Chapel at Buckfast Abbey, all made by the monks, it's around 20' X 40' that's the altar in front - the rough hewn glass bricks are about 8" square. The photo doesn't do it justice it is an incredibly peaceful place to visit it certainly has something special about it. Many visitors miss it at it is beyond the main body of the Abbey up a few steps.
