Buckfast is well worth a visit Richard. As you say that window is amazing.

Deco can have a fine 'clean-edged' look .... I did some stained glass for the house when we were building it that was a Deco/Mondrian mashup with the age-appropriate Victorian glass colours ... just a couple of filler panels at the side of a door. The seaside is a fruitful place for hunting deco architecture ... sadly, due to the building techniques (especially the use of metal framed windows) they don't fare well in coastal situations without diligent maintenance.

PaulF .... should you venture a bit further south the Watts Memorial Chapel (with its associated graveyard and Gallery) are well worth a visit ... especially for anyone with an interest in the Arts and Crafts decorative arts.

Richard ... that's lovely ... do you know when it was made ... recently I'd guess ... the rule of thumb for stained glass is 'the smaller the glass bits the older the window' 🙂 ... that has the look of an old window but a modern design and construction ... very nice.

While stained-glass is front and centre here's an interesting one local to me.

It's in Fyvie Kirk and is a memorial to Percy Forbes-Leith the son of the landed family who died in the Boer War (the head is his portrait) .... the window is by Tiffany and Co of New York ... there are only 2 Tiffany windows in Scotland, and this is the larger, so it's a serious piece of work to come across in a tiny village Kirk.

I wasn't sure when the Chapel was added but read this history and I see it was a 1964 build.

Around twenty years ago my son had a temporary job at the Central in Newquay and he was advised by a Scottish regular who was a street person that the Bucky was best value and asked Joe whether he had tried it which he hadn't, just about most others though

Well done having a go at a panel yourself, all I got to make at an evening class was a cubed night light holder and it was a fidget about.

Yes one of the main manufacturers of art deco metal frames windows was Crittall, we had them in our house with plate glass, but close proximity to the sea, meant lots of diligent maintenance both inside and out, even so we used to find every 3 or 4 years, we would see a small crack randomly appear in the plate glass and within weeks it would be completely cracked from the corrosuion build up/bloating on the inside of the frame. No matter how much rust prevention treatment we undertook, it was a regular occurrence.

I do like the slender metal frame so when we put in wood frame double glazing we had a modern coated aluminium 'crittall' style slime frame put in the downstairs bays,. It has 13 years on withstood the rigors of harsh coastal environment with no maintenance so far other than painting of the wood frame surround and no cracked glazing

Richard ... an old guy on the other side of the village was a stained-glass restorer (he was in his eighties then and sadly long gone now) and I got him to teach me the basics ... I enjoyed the traditional process .... may well do more when I finally see sense and hang up my racing gloves 🙂

John .... I'm surprised with modern scanners, cnc cutters etc that someone hasn't set up making perfect copies of traditional deco windows in stainless .... Deco houses definitely need keeping up with ... the style is very clean and sculptural ... looks great while perfect but loses the effect quickly if the (usually white) walls get rust-streaked or the windows degrade.

When we looked to replace our art deco crittall windows with double glazed units over 13 years ago, there was only one company in the UK at the time producing double glazed crittall frame style windows using a coated aluminium frame! And it cost about 3 times more than upvc equivalents.. so cost may have a bearing on replacement. Its the same with cast iron guttering, its extremely expensive to replace these days, compared to when it was in everyday use before plastic.

Our house which was an individually architecturally designed residence of a mine owning family, also has an interesting ingredient in the lime mortar not used in other houses around us. Because of its coastal location, it had fly ash (produced from coal powered electricity generating power stations) in its lime mortar that makes it very resistant to marine environments,
