I parked next to another mid engined 2 seater cabrio today and thought that perhaps the Boxster is missing something...



Both are instantly recognisable, both have a racing pedigree,
Both attract attention, the lady behind the 488 is clearly interested!

Both are turbocharged, both weigh about 1400kg, both are roadsters.....
One is a 3.9L V8 pushing out 661 bhp, the other is a 2.5L Boxster 4 with 350bhp

Both are about the same age

The Porsche could be on a dealer's forecourt for about £50,000, the Ferrari for about £175,000.

But I am impressed that a Ferrari 488 owner would park in a supermarket carpark, well a Waitrose & John Lewis one.
Not exactly Aldi....

I parked next to it, and spent a while looking at it.

The car was clearly a daily drive, the interior was "lived in", like my Boxster S.
but is it really worth so much more?
What does it do that the Boxster doesn't do?

I begin to understand Howard's perpetual dilemma

Add an MX5 and you have a real dillema.

Add a Morgan and you have a bigger dilemma 👍

While the Porsche is a fantastic car, the Ferrari is simply on another level. The same can be said between a the previous gen Audi S5 (V8) and a Bentley GT V8. Both are V8, both get attention to a variable degree etc. but at the end of the day, can't truly compare them from vehicle dynamics, exclusivity, technology etc.

More fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow......

More personally ... having spent 15 years racing a full-on single seater (and having rendered it a pile of scrap in a 'shortfall of talent' incident 🙂) I find myself trying to turn a cheap and cheerful '70s sports car into a classic racer ... proving to be loads of work so I'm really really hoping the above holds true !! 😁

I drove two different cars on trackdays.
Exige on Silverstone
Ferrari on Rockingham.
Both great fun and superb.
I have driven a Ferrari “in anger” on a teack so it’s potential ( as faras I dared” could be felt. Rear V8 at high revs. Chuffing awesome!
Exige with rear engine howling also superb. Getting out back in the garage meant falling/crawling to great amusement of others. Ferrari civilised.
The bigger grin? Ferrari.
The driving experience was similar (ish). But the badge added an aura.
On a recent trip to Scotland another hotel guest had a Lambo. We chatted. He was a high up in military aircraft design, certification. He loved Lambos. Pootled round as an almost everyday car but occasional blasts.
I’ve ticked the box for Ferrari. Happy to tick other boxes. Own one? A few years ago possibly if ££££ was available. I could get an Exige but impractical ( getting out of it).
I’d LOVE a Bentley Bluetrain. That would be my choice.
Parking...... I tend to look for open areas with whatever car I am in. Amazing how others then park right next to me!

The Porsche offers me vehicle dynamics and technology that blow every previous car i've owned away, but from you comments the Ferrari would be a further (big?) step up.
Probably a mistake to drive one, given it is unaffordable.
I'm happy with my little Porsche.
There is a 60 year retrospective on the 911 in Car this month, an interesting read. The next 911 will be a hybrid...I wish the next Boxster would be one,

Hmm, in a Porsche the engine is in the right place in the back, a front engine car doesn't traditionally fit the brand.
In order for me to really like a Ferrari, it has to have the engine in the front. All-time great: 250 GT SWB. But the current Roma is nice too.
