I was watching the program Mysteries at the Museum recently and saw a segment on an interesting paint scheme for British merchant marine ships during the World War I. When I saw a picture of ships painted like this I immediately thought it looked like one of the paint schemes applied to the last run of M3Ws, the P101, and wondered if this was the inspiration for this M3W paint scheme. I went back to Morgan’s website and indeed this particular paint scheme called “Dazzleship” was “inspired by the graphic camouflage of period military vehicles” per Morgan.

Norman Wilkinson was an artist who invented the dazzle, camouflage paint scheme in 1917 for British merchant marine ships during World War I to make it more difficult for German U Boat Captains to aim torpedoes at the ships which were being sunk at a high rate. It proved to be very effective in decreasing the number of ships torpedoed by German U Boats during WWI.

I really do like this paint scheme on the P101. When I first saw it, I wasn’t sure I liked it. I do appreciate Morgan has used the past for inspiration of this last run of paint schemes.

Take home: it’s going to be hard to torpedo a Morgan Three Wheeler with this paint scheme.
