Hello everybody, I am planning to upgrade the front suspension of my 1964 Morgan 4/4 and I saw 2 adds in the Morgan magazine: the SSL and the Berrybrook. I am also planning to put a more powerful engine, around 120 HP. What can yo tell me about them. Which is better? I intend to use my car for road only. Thank you

Berrybrook suspension? or did you mean Rutherford?

As far as I know, Berrybrook fit the SSL front suspension kit.
I like the SSL suspension kit very much. My 1954 +4 was one of the first cars fitted with the SSL (then called Suplex) kit to test out whether it worked on older Morgans. Since then I have been a fan of the SSL products. Both my current '61 +4 and my '04 Roadster have SSL front kit (and the SSL 5 link rear kits too). The SSL front kit softens the suspension over bumps, but when you corner hard it stiffens up so the Morgan does not wallow but tucks in nicely into the corner. Other Morgan owners have been pleased with the Rutherford kits supplied by Tim Ayres of New Elms. Maybe they will comment and help you make a choice.
I have no financial interest in SSL. I am just a customer, but have come to know Peter Ballard, one of the SSL directors, and always value his opinion.

Alfredo, as your car is a '64 I suggest you contact New Elms, they supply the renowned Dave Rutherford suspension mods. Highly recommended ...........

Another plus for the SSL RS kit is that it is adjustable to allow maintenance of the important zero pre-load on rebound spring. No other upgrade provides this. The kit also includes a proper bearing race between bottom of main spring and stub axle as fitted to new Morgan's in recent decades to lighten steering.

Hello Deejay, Tony, Taffmog and Richard, Thank you for your useful comments. You're right Deejay, Berrybrook is just a shop that sell the SSL kit. Now it's time for me to make a decision. I'll keep you informed. Best regards

Just be aware that fitting the bearings to the stub axle / spring seat on older Mogs can induce steering wobble, which kicks in at a certain sweet spot of speed (St Malverns' dance)
Cue some debate...

Don't dispute that Jon since I've heard it mentioned so many times. Question is what changed to alleviate it later - castor, camber, toe in, modern tyres, intro of r & p steering, or was it simply wear on older cars

Thanks John. Strange though that Tony was happy with the SSL kit on his 1954 and later 1961 cars though.
