Yes as John says. It's combined with inlet air temp (IAT) sensor. The OBD2 readouts I get suggest that not only my cold air inlet mods work, with IAT typically within 1°C of ambient, but the MAF benefits as well, further aided by a slab K&N filter, with high max readings (215 grm/sec) well above that calculated.

BTW in answer to the anti K&N filter lobby, I've cleaned the MAF sensor twice now in the course of 28,000 miles. On each occasion the aerosol cleaner residue was caught onto a clean paper towel. Not one iota of contamination was seen. This does require that you re-oil them with just enough to evenly cover the washable membrane.

Is it a hot wire, or hot film type MAF? I read somewhere that oiled filters like the K&N can foul the sensor, causing problems. Hot film sensors can be easily damaged by spray cleaners. I'll see if I can find the article...

Yes I read the same regarding use of oiled filters such as K & N, hence my comments refuting the claim. I believe my MAF sensor is hot film type.

It’s good fun to check the quality/cal of the intake temp sensor at rest. Mine is way off. Below is what my ECU was recording at lunchtime today compared to a thermocouple stuffed in the intake (with the car sat in a cold garage, with only the ignition on and hasn’t been started for a few days).

I did recalibrate my sensor in my previous car.

9C and 13C.

In their information literature K&N have this to say about their oiled air filters “Once the filter oil is properly and evenly absorbed through the cotton, the oil is almost impossible to remove without cleaner, even under extreme driving conditions”.

Richard’s findings on cleaning the MAF sensor would appear to concur.

Do the K&N instructions say you must use snake oil ?

They do say “Use only K&N oil”.

Some old school rally prep mechanic once told me it was just ATF oil, hence red colour

Picked up the header from Tubular Automotive Engineering today. I thought that I was going to need a new one, but they were able to repair it for a LOT less than a replacement would have cost. Great folks to work with. Off to get aluminum-ceramic coated next week...
