I have a 2000 4/4 (Silver top Zetec) and have replaced the three stop/tail lights with LEDs from ClassicCarLEDs. I want to also replace the six flasher/indicator bulbs and have a query on the relay or is it relayS?
Hanging under the dash are two relays taped together.I cannot easily tell if both are concerned with the left/right flashers and/or hazards.
I appreciate I need a new relay for the LED bulbs but is it one or two relays?

Welcome to TM Millie, from memory only one of the relays you have found will be the flasher, the other may well be the wiper delay one, they should be identifiable from a printed diagram on the top of each unit

According to wiring diagrams for that era of 4/4 there were two changeover relays in the dash area associated with selection of the hazard warning lights, possibly the ones taped together. This as well as a flasher relay which appears on first glance to service direction indicators and hazards.

Regarding LED replacements for indicators suggest discussing this with Duncan at Classic Car LED's. One option may be using his CANBUS friendly LED's which draw enough current to simulate filament bulbs, another would fitting his LED flasher relay, final and most laborious would be fitting resistors across each of the four indicators.

Hi Millie, I also have a silver top Zetec 4/4, a year older than yours, and I too have replaced all except the headlight bulbs with LEDs from Classic Car LEDs. To determine which relay operated the indicators, I dropped the dash and felt the 2 taped together relays while operating the indicators, you should easily be able to tell which one you will have to change (you'll feel it "clicking"). You also need to specify "Relay only" - you don't need one with an earth lead. The only slight downside is that the new relay is a bit on the quiet side, though I haven't felt the need to look for an indicator warning buzzer.

I changed all my bulbs for LEDs after following my daughter when she drove our 4/4 and noticing that the tail lights and indicators were very dim. The LEDs have really transformed the car's visibility in poor light, thoroughly recommended, and Classic Car LED's service is excellent.

The flasher relay will be the one with just three wires going to it, light green/pink, light green/brown and black.

I have led bulbs and this LED flasher fitted. Be aware that it is totally silent, so if you need / want a noisy indicator; I believe it's part of the MOT; you will need to fit some kind of noise maker.

The MOT requirements are there must be a functioning tell-tale for turn signal operation, but this can be audible or visual. If both and one fails it's still an MOT pass if the tester can see or hear the other. Hazards must have either a dedicated visual tell-tale or both turn signal visual tell-tales flashing together.

I found I needed a louder audible warning on my Roadster though as the OE one is feeble.

On the MG I have standard relays and they are virtually silent, however the warning lights are directly in front so impossible to miss.

On the Morgan I have an electronic relay, and the warning light is out of my normal vision range so I have a buzzer. It comes on after about 10 secs or so, but the brake pedal silences it. Quite useful, as I often found I was leaving the indicator on, especially when changing lanes.

Plan to upgrade both to LEDs this year, four bulbs and two relays are about £60 from classic car leds.

I have a buzzer I fitted as the 3.7l buzzer you can't hear.

I fitted a M/C beeper behind the spare wheel, simple to do cost about £7 as I couldn't hear the relay clicking.
