You would have the benefits of the auto box gearing but be able to drive it manually?

Just thought.

As BigLes and Jim have said, I would get the auto and use it in manual mode. Auto is great for the boring busy traffic stuff.

Thanks John, I’ll give crazy horse a call and see if there is any options… and emissions makes sense.

Thanks everyone, I guess I should consider the auto…. I seem to remember on the Morgan tour it was around 70% of the sales are now auto, there must be a reason smile

[quote=1560]the engine is made to be used with an automatic gearbox
the flywheel on the manual is way to heavy (like on all modern cars, except GT-Porsches and a few more specials)

On our two week adventure also this was a point of discussion too, why is the flywheel so heavy? I guess as you say the bmw engine is made for that a bmw transmission….
But I can’t just help myself….. the manual just calls to me …..

Cain at Wolf Performance was suggesting the heavy flywheel on the cyclone engine designed for autoboxes is also why the 3.7l Roadsteris part of the reason for rev hang.

I test drove both manual and auto Plus Fours. Opted for the auto. I can either leave it as pure auto or use the paddles so best of both worlds.
Kickdown gives a good surge in auto mode ! woohoo
Sport/sport+.....sharper response and fun.
Get to learn the response to your right foot and it is great. It covers both pootling along and more adventurous drives. innocent
I haven’t driven a Plus Six but can imagine the extra bhp! I can understand the crashes during test drives by the unprepared...pantsdown

I test drove a manual and auto back to back on the Donington track evening and on the local roads, as others have commented to manual ratios didn't gel with me, so if I ever swopped to a CX is would be the Auto (handy on our congested motorway and city stop-start traffic too)

I am not in the CX camp. I suspect that the automatic allows for a sportier driving style, which is a lot of fun. But it was, I strongly suspect, not intended. So the overlong rear axle ratio of the manual gearbox is a bad joke, even if the machine doesn't have too much to offer above 4,500 rpm, as some people report here. I have to rely on these reports. The automatic transmission, on the other hand, offers an unintended loophole for really sporty driving. I strongly suspect that the addition of more and more gears in the automatic gearbox was by no means intended to allow the engine to be driven in a very sporty manner in manual mode. Even if it works very well in practice. So people, be glad that you have the manual mode with the steering wheel paddles! The real intention of the many (and thus shorter) gears is that the normal driver remains in automatic mode and the machine remains extremely boring in the very narrow rev range of the most favorable fuel consumption. So a toast to the paddles...probably the next item to be banned.

I'm more than happy with the automatic... and Heinz is right, the fun really starts with the paddles 😀
