Having lived a life based upon self reliance as much as I could in terms of building and repairing all sorts, I have gathered tools a plenty which were highly valued. Over the last few years I have given most of my kit away to a young neighbour who is ever working on something in his yard. Least used, I suspect my imperial micrometre which was used for setting valve clearances on the various TC Lotus and Jaguar cars I owned over the years...

I just can’t bring myself to get rid of tools, some of which I’ve owned for over 50 years. So: AF & Whitworth Socket Sets and an Imperial Micrometer, along with a selection of BA fasteners, still grace my toolbox. Bud 4/4 - Stanley I still use my imperial mike quite a lot. Although I'm very happy working in metric, I do tend to prefer thinking in Thou for small measurements.

Too many to mention. There's an unwritten law of how tools recycle. When I was 17, I was given a few mismatched spanners and we had a house hammer, and a couple of screwdrivers. I mean, I took a scrap Anglia apart on the front lawn with nothing more than these tools, a large hacksaw and a rope which I and a couple of friends used to lifr the engine out. No crane for us. The dustbin men took the remains of the shell on a flat bed lorry.
I inherited both my grease guns and they will be passed on. Tools generally need to be passed on because secondhand they won't be worth much. I have a large Bedford Socket Set, made in Sheffield. It was given to me unused. It's so nice I never used it. I could sell it, but I'll just pass it on to SiL and if he doesn't want it, he can sell it.
The tools I rarely use now are my pullers, and valve spring compressor, and grinding paste & tool. Spanners don't tend to "age" whereas screwdrivers get serious abuse.
Of course I have a small collection of "modified" tools where I needed something for a one off application, such as a bent allen key, bent long small socket driver etc etc..........

Thinking about tools inherited/bought/found. I have tools from my grandfather ( wood chisels still used), dad’s tools. Dad’s are a great mix of coachbuilding stuff he used to make cartwheels, body parts and more. I have a block plane my grandad made himself ( all wood and long to give straight edges with a wooden wedge to hold the blade secure), a compass plane from my dad for planing curves, many odds and sods. A ratchet screwdriver with a side lever, sockets, spanners...... I also have a “special tools” box. A range of spanners of all sorts. One-off tools made to do a job. We had large scrap deliveries to the steelworks and reject spanners sometimes from the forging process. One good end? Cut the bad end off and a useful spanner you could “adjust” to do a specific job. Hammers, big persuader to body shaping ones. Tweezers ( long and short), drill bits galore, brace drill, hand drill, scrapers.... Digital caliper, Vetnier caliper, bevel gauges ( inc a digital one that measures angles). Cheap multimeter kept in the car toolkit, better one for general use, Bloody hell ! I need to get a grip! Oh! A range of clamps, pliers, forceps ( from fishing days), DA polisher with pads, polishes etc. That’s enough, coffee time.

What no cobblers last with lap shaped mounting...!!! (-: Our cobbler's last is used as a doorstop for the back door. I can't remember the last time I actually cobbled anything. Done loads figuratively of course :-)
