What did they use at the factory? What's a workable replacement if I can't find the NOS part(s?)
She's a 1958. The battery was in a plastic box that looked like it belonged in a motorboat.
It crumbled, of course.

Typically you will need a well attached galvanised steel tray with shallow lips to suit footprint of battery and locate base of same. Then a pair of long threaded J bolts to suit height of battery and hooking into the lips to hold it down. Many OE installations use a galvanised frame that accurately fits around the upper edge of battery shape and through which the J bolts pass to allow battery to be screwed down firmly into position. Picture below from my Land Rover illustrates.



The frame has to locate on battery such that it cannot possibly short the terminals.

I have no idea what was on a 1958 car but car builder solutions have modern trays here

I made one out of some scrap stainless ... under the bonnet on mine but the same principle applies.

The tray and clamp seems an ideal set up, though I guess some thought as to what might happen in a collision may be best applied...? In that case how well might the tray be fixed to the bodywork, and whether to mount the clamp relative to direction of travel. The battery on my mid 80`s +8 sits close by the diff with similar clamping arrangement.... Though in the case of a bump to the rear it seems the fuel tank is at risk of being punctured by the handbrake equalising mechanism, with battery damage/location perhaps providing a source of ignition.....Think there is info on GoMoG so related..?

I found something called a Universal Battery Carrier at a local car parts place that looks like it will fit.
I'll give it a try.
