The article with picture is about opposition of Wetherspoons opening in Marlow

“Marlow is a place where the Royal Swan Upper keeps a count on the Monarch's avian possessions.

And where a grey-haired gentleman, replete with tweed cap, black leather driving gloves and Barbour wax jacket taking his hand-crafted Morgan Plus Four for a blast through the Chilterns is completely natural.

Obviously the £40k car is topless, a sign of the driver's commitment to classic open top motoring regardless of the season.”

I bet they were glad to see the back of M&Co, bit downmarket with pants for a quid, and cheap "nasty" shoes! I shall be staying in Wetherspoons' The Old Borough in Swords next week, and if I could take the plus8 I would, free parking too. O.K its €100 / night, but then thats budget for Dublin, and the rooms here are the best we've seen in four years of contracting. €1.90 for a couple of very drinkable local IPA's one at 4% and one at 6%, Beamish at €4.80. Other local stouts available also, but not Guiness. Perfectly passable food selection as well at a reasonable price. Tim Martin's done a great job bringing the "trad" pub back down to earth and keeping pricing realistic. High taxation and PubCo entity shareholders are the main cause for all the other locals disappearing. I drive through too many former 1 or 2 pub villages on my journeys that are now devoid of that community hub. If it wasn't for us proles and the Hoi polloi, it'd be fifteen quid a drink and seventy quid a plate by now in all the celebrity "gastro" pubs.

I don't use Spoons. Not because I'm posh, because I'm definitely not, but because I don't want a single penny of mine ending up in Martins pocket.

Hi, nice picture of a MOG. I use to hate 'Spoons', In my eyes going into a town and putting pressure on other local pubs. But of course the pubs generally are not local, belonging to a large chain with shareholders, like Stonegate Pub Company, based in Solihull, but the company is registered in the Cayman Islands! My mate use to manage one of these 'Pubs' and once when he had a meeting with the area manager suggesting they do the same as Wetherspoons - but in bulk and therefore cheaper and pass the savings to the punters! He said that is what they do! But make it max profit to the Company. Unfortunately with the cost of beer going up £5.00 a pint (at least!) and people buying 12 pints for £12.00 in the local supermarket, i don't believe Inns/pubs have a long term life in the UK. But watch this happen, when the pubs are all closed down, you watch the supermarkets put the price up!

What a sad world, in the UK at least!. Going to work, and going home, no chance to socialise with the locals!

We use spoons regularly and also local pubs. I have no problem with the spoons concept.

It is not just the cost of a pint that has jumped up. The cost of a meal in a pub used to be very reasonable. Now most have become much more costly. Much as I dislike big chains I have to say that we found reasonable prices for a decent meal at the Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoon pub in Canterbury last spring.
