If we're talking say, 40 grand for two years? Just buy a Trad for 40 grand and keep it.
What am I missing? Same here Dave. I can only imagine that MMC reckon that there are enough wealthy people who are prepared to spend that much money to be seen in a new car. I hope they are right. If the 2 year-old cars, with probably less than 10k miles on them, are going to be returned to the factory, I'm now wondering if the factory could 'scrap' them and remanufacture the components into 'new' cars?

Giving it back after 24 months is just one option. One does have the option to buy it outright. I can see how this makes sense for a cash buyer due to being able to not part with the full amount upfront and make some interest on the other funds set aside to buy it out. Not sure what the confusion is.
Had this been offered last year when I toyed with the idea of getting a Plus Four, I would have jumped on it in a heart beat. Let's not forget the free paint/hide etc offer as well which makes the whole package look quite attractive.

I expect all these plots including the extended any colour option are just a means of hopefully keeping MMC's head above water with new sales. I think they will be heavily reliant on the US market, but last I heard this didn't include the Plus Six.

Standard industry technique for shifting stock, leverage the money in different models to increase the opportunities you hitch the attention of.
Might work on the future prospects they are aiming for? Cashless, credit based society of the future.

Whilst it may help move more new units, it could create a glut of used cars in a few years time that may be in excess of the used car demand. Which may become a problem for the factory to shift those used cars and therefore greater pressure and downward spiral on used car prices. The deal would be better if it was over 3 years not two.
Traditional Morgans were always seen a gilt edged as far as residuals were concerned, hold onto the car and you basically got your money back, so no real ownership cost . The CX seems to be moving those residuals expectation goal post downwards and the cost of ownership is getting more expensive, so hopefully there is enough new buyers with deep pockets. What that does for the second hand market is not clear at the moment, I know I wouldn't buy a CX earlier than MY23, due to all the known issues.
And with £40k you could buy a Trad keep it a few years, sell it and still see most of your money back, a much lower ownership cost experience for as much fun..

Agreed re pressure on the market. That's actually why it's two years, a customer who moves this into model will then just swap the car at the end of two years (unless things like the brakes fail) and so they move stock faster down the tree. Adding more pressure into the S/H market pricing relative to the historic model. Driving the pricing down to get more buyers into the pool as the cars become more accessible is the goal of expansion, at all levels.

Fair comment, but it assumes that the reliability issues are resolved and hopefully keener second hand prices should attract more customers..........where does it leave the trad market?

With so many trads out there for sale there's got to be some serious reductions in price for those any minute. My local has about 30 for sale at the moment! Unprecedented supply in my lifetime.

The Trads will find their level, don't panic Mr Mannering!
There's only a small overlap between the Trad market and the CX market. Obviously driven by cost, but also by appeal. It's rather like the advent of the Aeros. The money followed the Aeros, but always limited numbers.
Trads will always have a following. It might not sustain current expectations on residuals, but there are enough old blokes out there to sustain some sort of balance. The question is rather more about whether there are enough rich blokes/ladies out there to sustain CX production, and who want to use a CX as a daily, because as a weekend car that deal makes no sense.
