Had a new set of tyres fitted to my wire wheels which are currently off the car. The outfit that fitted the tyres balanced the wheels using adhesive weights, but I wasn't happy with the balance as they didn't have a suitable centring cone. I also had little faith in the adhesive weights so have had them balanced again by a 'reputable' classic car garage. They have again used self adhesive weights and when questioned assured me that they always balance wires this way. Alas 48 hours later I went in the garage and noticed one set of weights has already dropped off. Before the tyres were changed the wheels had conventional clip on balancing weights.
Before I go back to the guys who balanced the wheels I'd appreciate any advice on the proven method.
Many thanks

There's those who think bash-on (clip-on for those of a nervous disposition 🙂) chip the paint on the rim ... quite probably, but I've had them on my car (as did the previous owner) and not had a problem with rust ... a little rust preventer (waxoyl etc) on a cloth wiped on then wiped off seems to do the trick .... and not lost one yet

I'm firmly in the stick on camp, if you have a lad who knows how to programme the balancer correctly you also won't have any on the exposed outer face (nice!) BUT the secret is properly cleaning and degreasing, especially if fitting to used rims, if your fitter has lead alloy ones ask for those as they bend to the curve better and if done correctly stick like sh...t

No problem with clip on weights on stainless or chrome wires of course.

Only time I have had a problem with stick on weights is if the inside rim is not cleaned properly, no residue from ACF 50, used to protect. It also means no unsightly weights on the outside rim. I have a set of cones if the fitters do not.

Thanks, have spoken with the garage who balanced the wheels and they've agreed to try again with stick on weights. I'll emphasise the need for thorough cleaning although they do seem to know what they're doing.
Reassuring that a few of you have confirmed that stick ons aren't a problem generally.
