Well I finally got round to investigating the poor travel on the clutch pedal. Having previously replaced a split feed pipe from the reservoir, and bled the system, with no noticeable improvement, I decided to replace the slave and master cylinders. Slave first, again no noticeable improvement, so obviously not a defective unit. With the car up and good access, I could see I had purchased the wrong, or at least not like for like, master. Having got this far, I might as well take the master off and inspect it. Not a happy device, as it turned out the return spring had snapped, and over time coiled into its lower half; no wonder gear changes had become tiresome! Now to repair, if only temporarily. As the cylinders were the same bore, the plunger in the new unit was the right fit, but the spring was shorter, as was the body. I managed to repurpose the old spring seat, and got the old unit back together with the borrowed spring/plunger. Too dark now to continue, so clutch bleeding will resume tomorrow. In the meantime, does anyone know the part number or source for the original unit pictured below It's broken spring, so I can get one on the shelf? There were no discernable outer markings

Although it's made by someone like Caparo, you can only get them from Dealers or Cain at Wolf, last time cost me around £85 with carriage (which as usual is a bit of a rip off)

The newer version has a threaded rod & fork, this is a real bonus as you can accurately dial out the clutch pedal 'slop'

ps, you can't get repair kits either

Thanks CooperMan, I thought that might be the case. Worth noting that my replacement from mevspares has usable innards in a pinch. Actually, if I'd had a fitting for the spur, the part would have fitted fine. It cost £34.50 including postage. grin2

I hope this finds you well. I steadfastly remain fond of you and your car. It has me braving the problems of posting here.

Firstly, generally speaking, the current loss of even minor skills cost owners and their Morgans a lot.
But I know you, personally, to be a braver sort, merely in the need of a bit of guidance and I am letting that guide me. If this post is deleted, so be it.

Up until the new era, this was a quick repair that owners would do themselves. The repair kits cost 10 quid and that fixes them buy replacing all seals and such. Figure 15 minutes inexpert labor merely using the needy MC as your guide.
Those who wanted a more permanent solution usually, (if they are not into exotics) have their hydraulics stainless sleeved..which costs the same as a new master/or slave cylinder at normal retail prices.

If you can sharpen or change a chainsaw chain, you are far past the skill level needed for something like this. Tying shoe laces is harder.

Excuse my ignorance but why is your slave cylinder down there? Mine is buried in the Vee of the engine. What changed from 1990 to 2003, different clutch with the 4.6 engine?

I guess with the coil pack (Electronic ignition) up there there wasn't room maybe? I honestly have no idea Chris. The good news is my master is a stock Landrover part, available from the likes of John Craddock, Britpart etc, for around £50 +vat and pp
