Good day.

Yesterday the clutch cable broke, but I have a new one courtesy of a suggestion by a TM member when I bought the car (thank you!). The car is at a (non Morgan) garage, and the mechanic called and said he has the new cable fitted.

But it is on the end of the adjustment, so he thinks there might be a fault in the clutch. There was no time to discuss it, and he was about to close for the weekend so will resume on Monday.

In the meantime does anyone have experience of this, and can clutch adjustments be made other than on the cable outer sheath where it fastens to the bell housing?

And if the clutch needs to come out, does it mean engine and gearbox removal?

I do not have a workshop manual, and do not know if one exists.

On mine if I recall, you can also gain a bit of pull at the pedal end by adjusting how the pedal sits.

If the clutch was working OK before the cable broke, I would suggest there is a problem with the size of the new cable. Is it possible to compare the old with the new? Sometimes it's possible just to replace the inner, but that depends on the ends.

A check on the angle of the clutch actuating arm when relaxed would be useful in determining whether clutch wear is an issue or not.
If someone on here could kindly give some guidance on that from a similar year car…? (though not so many Fiat engined cars about)

I vaguely remember something about a cross shaft as part of the clutch actuation on cars of this era. I cannot remember the details but there is a possibility that the cable is OK and the cross shaft brackets have moved. Its 10 years since we sold our 1985 4/4 so I don't have a reference point. Hopefully someone with a better understanding will be along in a moment.

I can't see any alternative adjustment on mine. I'm struck with Tim's point that if it was working ok before maybe the cable length isn't the same?

I also have got the same Fiat-engined car. No workshop manual, but in the "Morgan Owners Handbook" it says:

"Clutch: Diaphragm Spring Mechanical Cable Operation Single Dry Plate
Clutch Release Arm Free Movement: 1/10" (2.54mm)"

if that is of any help to the mechanic.
