Mine will wet sump a lot of oil, 1.5 to 2 litres, given the chance, and that's with 20/50 oil. These days I tend to just pop off the plug leads to stop it firing and crank it over on the starter to get a decent amount of oil back up to the tank then reconnect the lleads and fire it up in anger. Before anyone comments, I'm running an Emerald ECU so can't do the crank it over on the starter with the throttle open trick which stops it firing on the standard ECU.

I'd avoid removing sump plug to drain any oil as the sump plugs are known to strip the thread in the crankcase quite easily.

I actually unplug the rectifier lead and crank over to scavenge the oil but this involves removing the bonnet - or do as Callum says just remove the plug leads and then crank it over.

I used to worry about wet-sumping and regularly drained oil from the sump after a layup - then I stripped the sump plug thread! doh Nowadays, I don't fret about it and just scavenge the oil back into the tank before starting (as the previous two posters have recommended).

Unless you have a non S&S ECU then there's no need to disconnect plug leads etc to turn the engine over without starting. Just depress the accelerator then hit the start button. The engine will turn over but ECU will not allow the engine to fire unless the throttle is closed.

Tried that yesterday - seemed to work! But you do have to be wary about draining the battery when using a 2l S&S as an oil pump wink

I’ve tried as well.
Took the plugs out to make it more easy for the battery and not to overheat the starter motor.
Let the engine turn over for a few minutes.
Didn’t see any significant rise in oil level.
Put the plugs in again and let started the engine at idle.
It took a few minutes at idle before the oil level was back to a normal level again.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. Much appreciated. We drained the sump and refilled it and cleaned the air filter and it started straight away.

Having a Morgan is very much YMMV! Mine never sumped until it did. The other day I drained about 1.5 qts out and poured it back into the main oil sump. Ran the engine (no smoke this time) until it heated up. One day later about 0.5 qt had already disappeared!

I don't get the sump issue, but If I have not run the car in a couple of weeks I find oil on the floor at the front of the engine?? where do I start looking to resolve this. there is not a lot of oil on the floor, but rather have none

We need a sticky thread on this issue. Much has already been written here, so I would recommend a search of previous posts rather than having us all go through this yet again.
