When safety legislation makes no sense. You need to have lights on stalks to show the width of the vehicle, but you can't have items like popup headlights since they cause a safety risk if you hit a pedestrian. I guess there is no chance these may cause a risk to pedestrians; especially when parked!

I can imagine that those will not last long at all because a shopping cart with clean them off the vehicle in quick order, not to mention knees and ankles and children.

The US version has larger indicators on much shorter stalks with a single rear brake/tail lamp, I'm sure you could find a US owner who would be happy to swap!
You can also mount the LED pods directly on to the body work- I've not done this myself but understand its possible. I expect this is how it was designed and then the stalks were introduced to meet the type approval process.
