It's not because of the seals the cocpit gets warm it's because when you turn of the heater you don't turn off the hot water it still flows through the heater box. It just shuts vents and air can still be forced into the car.

Yet again my car seems to be a Friday afternoon job The heater box seals as shown below are deep enough to seal with the bonnet. In fact you can zoom to see how they have shaped themselves to fit inside the outward facing louvres. The only gap is necessarily under the hinges.



I don't have any serious issues with heat in warm weather although the huge gearbox does transmit some. From what part is visible the lower flap seems to seal well with control set to cold.

With suitable depth closed cell foam and maybe some tweaks to heater box' flaps any car could seemingly be sorted similarly.

The heater intake (box) on my mid 80`s +8 has no foam sealing, and also has a small hole drilled through its base, that may or may not be original.... (-: Pretty sure Kevin who restored it told me that the foam could hold dampness and in time cause corrosion of the box it`s self. Rarely running with the hood up a little heat or the whiff of underbonnet aromas was never thought to be a real problem in my local climate...

In my experince, any bits of open (non-sealed) foam suck-up water. So if the seals were to be in contact with the underside of the bonnet, then surely rain or just washing would cause "soggy foam" syndrome and corrosion of the bonnet itself ??

Isn't that why closed cell foam is used?

You would certainly think so. However I've used foam of several kinds on classic cars over the years, and I find the "closed cell" stuff still sucks up water. A smooth (sealed) edge sorts that, but in the application under discussion the sealed edges are the vertical surfaces.

I think mine is too! it's exactly like yours! Hang on........ perhaps Morgan only worked on a Friday to keep the waiting list strong!

Update: Good outcome (IMHO) on the heater box foam saga. I bought two kneeler pads on Ebay for a bargain £7.19 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115792899002, they are made of some kind of light but dense black foam. I made a cardboard template to the size required, with the appropriate taper (by eyeballing along the underside and side of the bonnet). Using a very thin and sharp saw blade (aka a bread knife, as with cutting expanded polystyrene), the pieces turned out nicely. If you are really picky you can remove any saw blade marks by rubbing the pieces on a sheet of medium-grade sandpaper. I stuck them in place with good quality double-sided tape. The bonnets now pretty much touch the foam, and all seems fine on a drive out, so mission accomplished. (Oh and the unused mat now resides in my garden shed).
