On my trad I used aquarium pump filter foam ( large cell) to repkace the original foam that was perished. It's surprising how much came in through those rear louvres with the downdraft from the windscreen back pressure. Car was a Plus8 and under bonnet got hot so cool air for the heater was important. Luckily the seals on mine worked ok. I used plasticine peaks to check bonnet to seal fit. They were squashed down by the bonnet and confirmed the sealing.
