Real 2-wheel statement ... never ridden one, but always wondered if they weren't a bit over-engined to be a completely 'rounded' riding machine.

Something older and more restrained.

Bevel cam drive gear on a BMW RS 54 (1954) ...... German Engineering as opposed to the previous Italian Flair 🙂

And that's why they last longer than the Latins grin2 built to last..

The first time I saw and heard a 916 I couldn't believe how beautiful it looked and sounded, but small and I remember thinking if I was a rider I wouldn't fit !
Back in the day I had a ride of a mates Ariel Arrow and subsequently his Bonnie and they seemed bigger to my memory and very rapid compared to my Singer Chamois grin2

I happily owned a sublime Ducati 999s Monoposto for nearly 3 years.
Termignoni straight pipes and the suspension set professionally to my weight and riding style.
It was glorious.

I remember when they launched the Ducati Monster - in all the press footage it looked amazing and ticked all the boxes. However, when I got to see one in the flesh, it looked like it was 3/4 scale.

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks that they are small bikes.

Simon will have been well suited as he is of smaller proportions to us, but beautifully marked grin2

Yup, looking at the Beemer valve gear took me back to my Ducati owning days, in the sixties and early seventies, though they varied in cubic capacity from 197 through to 250, thus quite small machines. The overhead cam drive was split in order that it`s overall length could be shimmed in order to obtain the correct degree of mesh with the OHC gear. The shims would fail in time creating a high degree of clatter in the head. One other fault was that the separator main bearing would fail, creating a rumble like an earthquake.... Both of which were easy fixes, Electrics were another story, all black wires...(-:
I did like engineering back in the day when each country had different thinking on the way to achieve similar ends...

In memory of our friend Phil Aynsley, renowned photographer of motorcycles.

I had the honour of acting as his "assistant" after I had introduced him to the owner of this example, which is part of a private collection.

He published a book "Phil Aynsley; Ducati: A Photographic Tribute"

I recorded the Guzzi V8 that was at Goodwood in 2002. Impatient types may wish to skip to 40 seconds.

Phil was a regular and welcome contributor on the Bevelheads email list for enthusiasts of older Ducatis, which I hosted for a while and last year I talked, well emailed, with him about a picture of the Type 3 350 Guzzi that was in a story of his about the Moto Guzzi museum.
