No it was my commute for 45 years to up country having a hatred of Motorways, it's a nice reverse funnel for us down here living the quiet life and long may it remain so. Our family love the peace and quiet of the village of their childhoods when they holiday with us.

K I will admit that Stonehenge and Avebury leave me cold being the total Philistine, Skara Brae on Orkney and Jarlshof on Shetland were whole new interesting visits for me.though, I bloody loved them.
Callanish on Lewis did little for me though. Stanton Drew Stone Circle is a much quieter experience than Avebury or Stonehenge... with a big stone in the Druids Arms pub garden if you don't care to walk around them! Nearby is the Wansdyke and Maes Knoll iron age fort, but they are pretty boring compared to say Cley Hill between Warminster and Frome opposite Longleat...

Paul, thank you for those interesting references, I'll be sure to check them out when we are in the area.

Of course it could have been a glacial erratic ... the ice came down as far as the midlands and Wales .... I think you'll find there were several layers of people inhabiting present day Scotland in the 2000 years between Stonehenge being built and when the Scots rocked up ! 🙂
K I thought that as well. My bet is pre-historic glacial action

Well someone had to say it!

George, these kind of never ending changes in history just make me think, another PHD another theory Either that or just a slow night for news Richard..... On the other hand it seems the area around the Western Isles may indeed be geologically significant, in that it is reported to have the oldest rock formations in Europe..? perhaps all the usual rainfall in this part of the world has washed away all the newer rocks...

Having spent many subsequent years on Lewis for short periods I can confirm the rain washes everything away so you could well be right.
