Think I’ve lost a wheel balance weight, anyone know a tyre fitter close to Chester/Wrexham who can balance wire wheels.

Thanks.

There is a tyre place in Buckley, can't remember the name, I bought a set of tyres off them in 2019, where they balanced my wire wheels (still OK now) try google "tyre Buckley"

Yes that’s who I’ve used previously But they’ve changed hands and are now part of a national chain. All the old chaps have left and it’s just ‘quick fit’ youths that are left. Doubt they’ve ever seen a wire wheel let alone balanced one.

Cheers.

But on the plus side they'd be able to tell you everything you needed to know about how 22" alloys and low-profile tyres would make your car look 'sick' 😆

Well I have lost a weight, there’s a tell-tale mark on the inner rim. But more importantly there s quite a bit of play in the near side wheel bearings. Nicely nipped up now and a little morning run tomorrow will see what impact it’s had. Also I think I’ve a solution to the wheel balancing.

Bit of an update.

Cheekily I went to Buckley Tyres this morning and found the oldest looking fitter I could. Asked him if he remembered John (the ex owner who sold out to Protyre) and his Morgan. Yes he did and he still sees John from time to time. Does he still have the balancing cones, yes he did. Does he know how to use them, yes he does. They kept them at Johns insistence for balancing his wires.

All seems well. forgot to ask if they still know how to jack the Morgan and remove the wires. Am I paranoid??

Also

Checking the tyres and they all seem to be getting on a bit (10 years) but are still soft and have loads of tread. I'm inclined to change them for Toyo Proxies, which I had on the MX5 and they were fine, about £75 per corner fitted. Balancing the wires would cost £12 per corner so the additional outlay would be £62 per corner.

hmmm...

Change them for gods sake. At 10 years old they are unsafe

as I said...

"I'm inclined to change them"

which means I almost certainly will.

However they haven't done many miles and have always been garaged so unaffected by UV. The treads are very soft and still over 6mm all round. There are no cracks in the sidewalls or between the treads. They don't slip and brake evenly. I do wonder if the vibration is from a flat spot from standing though.

I know every right minded individual says tyres have a shelf life of around 8 years but what is that based on? I don't know. These seem in better condition than the 2 year old tyres on the Golf, The 1 year old BMW tyres and the 3 year old Audi tyres.

but for £300 I'll get new ones sooner rather than later, but I'm not really sure why!
