I am not a computer guru, I get very frustrated with computer stuff, but have decided to give it a try, as my nearest Morgan dealer is an aggravating two hour one way drive.

I am in the U.S. I have a 2014 5 Speeder. Earlier this season the “Check Engine” light would occasionally flicker on while the engine was idling, but now it is on constantly at any engine RPM. If I turn on the ignition switch, don’t start the motor, everything goes as normal at first; the check engine light comes on, goes out after a few seconds, but then comes back on and stays on after about 10 more seconds, even though the motor hasn’t been started. If I start the motor, the check engine light stays on continuously. The engine is completely stock and runs normally.

I am a reasonably experienced aircraft mechanic and would like to trouble-shoot this myself, but I am completely new to OBD. Any guidance from someone familiar with the 5 Speeder after market OBD process would be greatly appreciated.

I am an Apple, IOS person. I do not have a Windows computer.

QUESTIONS
1. Where is the OBD port located on a 2014 5 Speeder?
2. Recommended OBD reader, $150 or less range? Yes, I will read the instructions that hopefully come with it.
3. I don't know what the codes from the OBD detector mean. Hopefully they will be explained in the instructions.
4. I think there is a “special” adapter cable needed to connect the OBD reader to the 5 Speeder OBD port. Info please?

Any experienced guidance is appreciated.

Thank you,

Rich Gibson

Hi Rich, the USB diagnostic port for the ECU is shown below with access plate removed, under the standalone relay and to the right of fuse panel.

You need to get a suitable lead from your laptop installed with the S & S ProTune app to access fault codes. Others will be along to provide more info.

Rich you will need a Windows PC and download a copy of Protune II from https://www.sscycle.com/racing/support
This application is not available for Mac so maybe either borrow a PC or just get a cheap one of eBay.

The connection is a standard USB cable.

Once plugged in you will be able to read the fault codes and clear the engine check light.

Sorry can't help there Gordon. The Imgur picture hosting site I use appears to be working fine as normal.

Rich, to be clear, the M3W does not have a standard OBDII port, so standard OBD tools won't work here.
As Chris and Richard have noted above, you will need the Protune software loaded on a computer and connected with a USB cable with a mini B male end for the ECU, as shown in the link below. These should be readily available on Amazon.

Thank you to all above. You have answered many questions for me.

I have been looking at ProTune II from S&S and feel a bit intimidated. I need to do more studies on it to understand how it works. What is the difference between the S&S software and if I buy one of the dialogistic devices on Amazon?

None of the standard OBD tools will work here. You have to use the Protune software, period. It's free, but somewhat obtuse to use.

Rich: I am also an FAA licensed Airframe and Powerplant mechanic. As you, my computer abilities are at best, basic. I will be following the thread, and wish you success in finding the solution.
Best,

Tom

Protune has two user modes, basic and advanced. It starts up in basic which only allows you to read data from the ECU and delete fault codes.

In advanced mode you can access live running data and, if you have an unlocked ECU, make changes to pretty much all of the parameters.

So if you stay in basic mode you won't be able to screw anything up.

Before you go down the Protune route check the fuel pressure which should be 58psi. There is a Schrader (tyre type) valve behind the right hand cylinder and you can get cheap fuel pressure gauges off Amazon/eBay etc. Check it's 58psi when you turn the ignition on then start the engine and run it for a about a minute or so and check the pressure stays at 58. If it drops at all then you need a new fuel pump and the best bet is to go for the Walpro upgrade.
