Throughout my sixty-five-plus years of M3W ownership I have always considered a tow rope to be an essential 'tool' to carry with me. (although I can count on the fingers of one hand, the number of times it has been used ;in anger') Now that these have been outlawed has anyone found a satisfactory and portable alternative and what is the recommended anchor point on the front of an M3W?

Surprised to hear that tow ropes are illegal, not sure if that is the case. had a quick google and its seems tow ropes are still legal in UK.

It's worth noting that the M3W Handbook says the car must not be towed, although there's no reason given.
And as there's nothing to tie the towrope to at the back (apart from a roll hoop) it's not much use as a tow vehicle either!

I've been told that there is an oil pump in the gearbox that is driven off the input shaft so if the box is in neutral then the oil supply is compromised if the output shaft is turning. Not a problem for a short bit of coasting but if correct then could do damage if towed for any distance.

Something for the Admin to consider: If the CX 4 wheelers justify their own forum, then so do the classic M3Ws ...

So its not out 'outlawed' to tow as such its just that some vehicles, also like Autos gearboxes on conventional vehicles can be damaged by towing and drive wheels lifted instead.

Apologies; I'm delighted to learn that I was misinformed! For the record I have a five speeder as well as my trusty F-Type. They seem equally reliable. but I'll continue to carry a tow rope! Thanks, Red Three, for highlighting the potential oil pump problem.

I'd heard that too but someone pointed out that it's fine to tow an MX-5 with the same gearbox so the oil pump theory doesn't really make sense - but then it is Morgan we're talking about........

Surely you're not suggesting that some information on the Internet might not be absolutely and definitively correct?
