Took the tin top in for a service today its fourth in order to keep the warranty going, Quite a large itemized bill and on the bottom wiper fluid,I told the service manager it had been filled a half hour before arrival he then backtracked and said some sachets had been added.I then said it was impossible as I had filled it to the top and asked to see the mechanic, he then dissapeared into the workshop and when he returned admitted none had been added. It does make you wonder how many more corners are cut. None cut on the Mog as I do my own but it does take a full day with quite a few tea breaks......Em

I took my Audi to the local dealer for a service and MOT, they phoned and said it has failed on emissions we need to put it on the computer to find out why, that will be £200. REALLY. I said no I'll collect the car. I took it for an MOT locally, passed no problem.

Never had a service and MoT done at the same dealer - its an invitation to create work and since much of the MoT fail decisions are marginal., thats easy to do.

Always have a quote for the service beforehand.

But the motor trade is no worse than plumbing or leccy work and a damn sight more honest than builders. In my experience of course

Thankfully we have a good honest local garage.

I do remember with some garages telling them the wash bottle was full as I checked the car in. Still to get a bill for 1l of fluid.

Same here I just ignore it as it's a very small amount and they have saved us a lot of money over the 40 years we have been with an independent VAG trained garage.

I check every bulb before putting my daughter's tiptop in for service , but it always comes back with at least 1 replacement. Impossible to prove that it didn't blow between me leaving it and them working on it. I think they treat it as another revenue stream

It was on it's last year of a service plan. Shot themselves in the foot as I was about to renew it.

I always get hacked off by those little tricks as well.
I provide a list of the things I want done and not done on a list when I book the car in.
It also stops the chinese whispers waste of time which can happen in the larger dealers.

I don't want to deny them business but I do hate cheating.

In my experience of the motor trade; the ‘local hero’ will always give far better service than the corporate PLC.
Sadly though, with the rapid increase in EV technology, I suspect that the local hero dealers could struggle with the investment needed.

Many of the small independents also don't always have the garage space for keeping EV's the safe distance apart as currently recommended, let alone the training and infrastructure to service EV's. Our current father and son Mercedes trained independent set up may see the father out to retirement, but the son may struggle in the years to come.
