Just filling in advanced passenger information on a holiday website and was intrigued with the country drop down list showing the Isle of Wight.

I wasn’t aware that they had declared independence from the UK.

Has a militia wing of the Newport council staged a coup?

Perhaps Labour has gifted the island to Mauritius along with Chagos in a BOGOF deal sweetner.

Quite fancy a tax haven retirement home in Ventor though.

Maybe as the Isle of Man is a crown dependency with it's own parliament some bright spark assumed the Isle of Wight was as well.

I live on the Isle of Wight and some years ago, about 1996 if I remember correctly the Isle of Wight council decided it would be a spiffing idea and a great tourist novelty to have Isle of Wight fiat currency produced that could be spent on the island. Unfortunately before I could get my hands on one these coins they where rapidly withdrawn when the HM treasury threatened to lock the council up in the tower of London and throw away the key !! The police stepped in and decided they contravened UK currency legislation. Just about on a par with all the other daft ideas our council come up with.

The IOW must have gone the whole hog in some way to end up on the wrong end of the law.

There's been lots of 'local currency' schemes in the UK (Bristol ran one for about ten years if I recall) ... but they all eventually fizzled out.

Interesting idea that just didn't catch on.

K

Ps found a pic of them online ... don't look a lot different from Euros to me 🙂

The Stroud Pound scheme fared similarly. It was great for trading skills amongst the community, but ultimately it fell from favour because good old cash money is a universal exchange medium.

Totnes had a similar system but as it is fairly reliant on visitors it petered out, they returned to their familiar currency of goods or services for a bit of blow or sniff.

In our village we barter skills and "things" quite a bit as we all trust one another.
There is a sufficiency of incomers and second homers to keep our tradesfolk busy so no one loses out and friendships flourish, we wouldn't ever move its a very special village.

Our plot is reserved in our Sunday meeting yard already as its almost at capacity and it has a sea view laugh2. Last one home that is grin2
