It's only an estimate and it may go higher of course, also the reserve may be set above the estimate. The 16.2% commission will add considerably to the hammer price !

Presumably there was no interest when advertised by this Morgan dealer. Surely if they'd listed it at £40k rather than £60k it would be sold which makes the auction estimate look a bit peculiar.

I struggle with that. In a recent (non-automotive) auction, the auctioneer told me ".....we cannot legally set an estimate that is below the reserve figure ". Does anyone who has more experience of auctions than I do, know for sure ?

Actually I've heard the same and I think it's usual to have the reserve below the estimate. However, my understanding is that the reserve can be set at up to 10% above the estimate.

In this specific case I find it very strange that a car recently advertised at a Morgan Main Dealer for £60k, would be allowed to sell for less than half of that amount.

It’s a buyers market… Expect reserve will be £30k or just below. The market is flooded with CX and Trads which are not selling,.

There is an ASA ruling that setting the estimate below the reserve can amount to making a misleading claim when advertising the car - the ASA can thus force the Auction house not to do this....and if they continue to do so, there is presumably some legal or financial penalty.

Even considering the current state of the market that's more than £20k below any similar age/spec car.

I can't believe it wouldn't sell for more than £30k if it was advertised directly.
