Looking at Autotrader there are some amazing EV deals. Jag iPace for £20K? Delivery mileage smaller battery Kia Soul EV ie new £18K? My favourite from a YouTube assessment of 2nd hand EVs was the Audi Etron for £20K…

Another vote for a late-model used BMW i3 - brilliant cars and in their way like the Audi A2 a design/concept to cherish ....

I had a colleague with an i3s and it went very well. Enjoyable to drive and it did not cost a lot to run according to him. Smart interior with some real style compared to most plastic stuff around the price. He was very happy with it and when they stopped making it he bought one as a keeper. There are some great deals on secondhand EV's as mentioned before.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

A word of caution Howard. Most of the cars that have the better self driving aids sadly don't do so well with many of our UK roads. I had an ID5 which did brilliantly on a dual carriage way but once on a narrow A or B road, well, let's just say I thought it was out to kill me!
I always had my hands on the wheel and actually was doing all the driving, but the car couldn't distinguish what was what on a narrow road and often I had to take action to avoid being forced into a verge or the soft shoulder.
Same car had an advance back up system where it will break if it thinks you are about to hit something. Sadly, it mixed up cars 2 rows behind me and slammed on the brakes with full force!
Tesla seems to have things sorted the best from the last drives I've done, however it's easy to get caught out.
Perhaps you know but all newly registered cars from April must have traffic sign recognition and warnings if you go over the limit. Some even have gone so far as to retard throttle response if you are at the speed limit which can be quite disconcerting. It can be turned off but it's back again the next time you get in. I've been living with it since July and it's a massive PITA. Something to keep in mind. Got some of that on a 2019 Merc estate - speed limit warnings that are useful when I notice them not least because limits change every 50 yards. Plus "following too close" bongs not needed if SWMBO is on board. And I suspect some level of auto braking if the follow too close gets really close. Only thing I always turn off is Radio2, which SWMBO turns back on again

EU regulations known as GSR2, all aimed at reducing the considerable numbers of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. AS far as I can see the UK hasn't signed up to this but the chances of manufacturers making UK-only cars which don't have ADAS is practically zero I would think. In theory, the UK could produce its own set of Type Approval regulations, but they'd still have to comply with those of our markets or we'd never export anything. New rules around active safety features in new cars, which include ‘speed limiters’, come into effect from Sunday (July 7 2024).
The EU’s ‘New Vehicle General Safety Regulation’, also known as GSR2 or Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, amends the minimum performance standards (known as type approval) for motor vehicles in the EU, adding new required Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
These include Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW), and Emergency Lane Keeping Systems (ELKS).
Yousif Al Ani, principal engineer for ADAS at automotive risk intelligence company Thatcham Research, said: “Crash avoidance is the future of automotive safety.
“Modern vehicles are very good at protecting occupants in the event of a collision through passive safety features, such as airbags and crumple zones, but these have limited benefit to vulnerable road users (VRUs).
“KSI (killed or seriously injured) statistics amongst VRUs remain stubbornly high at more than 11,000 each year. The key to reducing these numbers is through the wider introduction of active crash avoidance systems.”
Al Ani explained that the UK is yet to sign up to GSR2 which vehicle manufacturers will adhere to across Europe.
“The technology mandated by this directive is already found in most new cars and the UK could be at risk of falling behind in automotive safety by not adopting it,” he said.
“As ADAS is increasingly fitted to cars, vehicle manufacturers will need to address concerns from drivers that these systems, such as Emergency Lane Keeping Systems, interfere with their driving experience.
“Striking a balance between safety, performance, and integration to create systems that cooperate with drivers is a real challenge for manufacturers.”
He added: “Drivers must also be aware that ISA is an assistance system and that they will remain liable for the safety of their vehicles.
“Incorrect information provided by ISA does not exempt drivers from speed limit infractions. It can also be overridden or switched off at any time.”

How much testing doesn't reveal how a car will try and put you in the hedge or slam on brakes if I'm reversing my wife's Volvo and another comes within half a mile of me? Or the Hyundai saloon a garage loaned me that forced me off when I was trying to turn right once. Or my friend's Merc which has removed all feel from the steering wheel then fitted special cameras to see the white lines in the middle of the road and create a fake vibration in the steering wheel...what?

Or my Volvo which see a 20mph limit sign opposite the junction where I am turning left onto a road with a 40 limit so would restrict me to 20 in a 40 limit until I pass another 40 limit sign. Safe, I don't think so. I tried the lane keeping aid, it was horrible.
